Hi,
The Griffiths valuation ( c1864) shows a Matthew Jeffers renting a house and about ten acres of land in the townland of Armaghbrague in the parish of Lisnadill.

The will of a David Jeffers in 1859 in Tullybrone naming his wife Mary nee Kennedy, and his sister, Margaret Jeffers, as his beneficiaries.  Oath made by Mary Hogg of Armaghbrague.

Matthew's land passed to a John Haughey in 1871 (Griffiths Valuation Revision Book).  There is a death index entry for a Matthew, aged 70, who died in 1870 in the Mohill registration district who is likely the same individual.

Hello Elwyn, It is hard to say, When he married in Liverpool it was at St Luke's Anglican Church, but his children were all baptised Catholic, except one, who was baptised Anglican, and he was buried as a Catholic.

Hello Eileen, thank you for that information, that could be very useful. My main reason for posting is to find the baptism record of Joseph supposedly born 1842, family tradition has it that he was from Armagh, and his marriage certificate stated that his Father was Matthew Jeffers, a Farmer, there may have been another son, a Samuel Jeffers of Liverpool has his Father named Matthew Jeffers, a Farmer on his Marriage certificate too.

If your family are the Armabrague one Kingskerswell has noted, then that’s in the civil parish of Lisnadill and the RC parish of Kilclooney. The RC baptism records are on-line on the National Library site but unfortunately do not start till 1844, so if 1842 is accurate as Joseph’s date of birth, you may not find it. (You might find siblings born later though).

The Church of Ireland in Armaghbreague lost it’s early records in the 1922 fire, so has none before 1877. Methodists (Keady) have baptisms from  1815, Presbyterian Armaghbrague from 1908, and 2nd Keady pres church from 1855. So in short, apart from the Methodists, no denomination has any records for 1842.

Jimgillbanks, as Elwyn has so ably described, these are some of the many drawbacks of searching for Irish ancestors.
