Barton family from Worth, Kent
« on: Tuesday 01 March 16 02:24 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Barton family in Worth, Kent from about 1694 to 1835 but have not been particularly lucky as parish records before 1722 do not seem to be available. Grateful for any further details, particularly history on the farm.

Familysearch implies that BT's are available for this parish from 1564

Many thanks, Rosie. I've managed to find Tyler's Index on Ancestry and gradually finding the information.

Rosie

You may remember my request about parish records for Worth as I could not find the ones before 1722. Last night I was trying to find further details on Richard Read, a tailor from Worth married to my 7th great grandfather's sister. This is what I found, "The old register book of Worth, which probably went back to 1559, was destroyed by one Richard READ, the clerk there who judging it to be “out of date”, and being a tailor by trade cut the parchment into slips for measures! (info from book “The Memorials of Eastry”, reprinted in KFHS Journal Dec 1994)" (http://www.kenthistoryforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=10156.0(http://www.kenthistoryforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=10156.0). So it's one of my relatives who has complicated the research for me!

Thank you for posting that, it is very interesting and more so as it is one of your family.  He was only trying to be thrifty  ;D

It looks as though there may be bishops transcripts available but there are a few gaps

No wonder the bishops were worried and had their own copy! There must have been other thrifty or careless clerks. Being a relative, I can't complain, can I?
