Thanks Claire for your reply. I have just found a christening of a Stephen Marlborough 13/08/1786 in Shenley, Hertfordshire with parents Tho and Ann Marlborough. the date would make him about 20 at the time of the marriage. But is there anyway to confirm that it is the same Stephen?

Yes ... there is. Not guaranteed to yield results, BUT ... the probability is that the parents stayed in Shenley so look for a Thomas Marlborough buried in Shenley in the period 1785 - 1825 (1805 +/- 20 on a FindMyPast search). If you draw a blank, check 1825 - 1835. He's unlikely to have lived much later because a birth date of 1765 or earlier is indicated.

Assuming that you find a burial, go looking for a will and if you find one, see whether it acknowledges a son called Stephen.

If this draws a blank, go and trawl the Shenley registers for other baptisms of Marlborough children with parents Thomas and Ann for 20 years either side of 1786, these being siblings of the Stephen baptised in 1786, and then go looking for THEIR marriages (start with the sisters, as they almost certainly married in Shenley, whereas sons might not have done). Who were the witnesses at THEIR marriages? Was Stephen one of them?

If still without your evidence, try to trace as many of these potential siblings in the 1841 and 1851 censuses. Are any of them living with anyone who you can associate with "your" Stephen? They will be getting old by 1841 and may well be livin gwith children; but those who didn't have children might be found wiht nephews or nieces, or ...

Well, there's a few ideas to get you started, at any rate.

Shenley registers are missing from FindMyPast for that period, they only have one register digitised and that's burials for 1894-1939.  You unfortunately need to go the Records Office or order the film in at an LDS Family History Centre.  Its one of the numerous ommissions for Hertfordshire on FindMyPast. ::)

HALS does have Victuallers Recognisances for

John      Marlborough 1790-1821 The Crown Elstree
Thomas Marlborough 1822-1828 The Crown Elstree

Elstree geographically close to Shenley/Radlett/Watford/Aldenham/Barnet
( but not necessarily in that order )  :)
