Cornelius and Ann Walker, Chichester
« on: Sunday 06 March 16 16:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Frances Walker, my 3x great grandmother was baptized October 31, 1795 at St Peter the Great in Chichester; parents were Cornelius and Ann Walker.  I have found nothing else concrete about them associated with this parish.  I would like to find a maiden name for Ann or information about other children in this family and if they had roots in West Sussex.

I believe that they went to London for the 1800's as I have found a Cornelius Walker buried in Bunhill with his granddaughter Elizabeth Frances Cade.  Frances went by the name Fanny and married Robert Cade in London.

So, can anyone help me with more ideas about the family in Chichester?
or, if I come to West Sussex, where could I go to do my own digging about this family?

Would appreciate any guidance on this, please.

Yes, thank you.  I believe you are correct.  The other children are on my radar as is the burial in Bunhill Fields.
But the information about the marriage to Ann Headley is new....and raises more questions as it is in Suffolk, while Fanny alone seems to have been baptized in Chichester in West Sussex.   On some of the census info, her birthplace is shown as Brighton.
Thanks for all of your help...

The thread of dissenter runs through this family...though Cornelius is my first record of it.  Robert and Fanny buried their first child at Bunhill Fields.  I believe that Robert was the grandson of Luke Cade who was at Old Church, a good citizen, served on the jury at the Old Bailey and the Poor Law Council but cannot confirm that Robert's father, John, was Luke's son, John as I cannot find the records for John's birth or death.  Anyway, while Robert and Fanny moved to Ipswich, where apparently it is possible that Cornelius may have married Ann Headley, Robert then ran the ragged boys school at St Clements and his son, was a founding member of the Wesleyan congregation in Ipswich and that Wesleyan tradition continued on, though the elder Robert was the clerk at St Clements until his death.
So back to Cornelius Walker...where did he come from in 1756, why was he married in Suffolk, had children in different places in London and even in Chichester and then was buried at Bunhill Fields?

I have been looking for these answers for about seven years now and am wondering if the answers can be found if I go in person to Guildhall to tie these pieces together.  But is there also a place in West Sussex where I can personally go to looking into the records?  There are some Walkers in Arundel which is nearby....

Your suggestions are always welcome.
Thank you

The West Sussex Record Office is in Chichester.    The staff there are very helpful and you can book a parking space if you ask in advance.
The Sussex Family History Group online database for members only has two entries for Cornelius.  Your Frances in 1795 and Mary Anne baptised in Arundel in 1800.  It is possible that there might be clues in the original registers which will be at the Record Office.
