Something amiss here.
The passenger list for BOSKOOP 26/7/1941 states destination Bombay.
According to the convoy lists, BOSKOOP sailed from Liverpool on 27/7/1941 as part of convoy ON (Outward North)(Atlantic) 2. with her intended destination port as Trinidad.
It could be  Trinidad ia a mistake or BOSKOOP could have sailed so far with ON2 and then proceeded as an independent to Bombay.
BOSKOOP was a Dutch vessel managed by Clan Line untill 1943, pre war she was a regular caller to the West Indes, Trinidad in particular.
If in fact, she did finish up there when in ON2 It would cast doubt on the person on her passenger list being the man you are looking for.
The easiest way to confirm where she was at is to download her wartime Movement Card.

I wont dispute your maritime knowledge.    It could be that Naval Intelligence at that time had knowledge of U boat wolf packs operating in certain parts of the Atlantic and decided to send the ship on the long route.  As I think they did with some large troop convoys towards the end of 1941.

Well in answer to all these more expert answers on war time shipping, cannot get away from the following.
Find My Past   IMAGE    for the Boskoop Clan Line sailing from Liverpool 26 July 1941, definitely gives Ceylon as his disembarkation place, with several other passengers.
Believe it actually left Liverpool on 31 July 1941

Somewhere  I came up with a reference to,,,,,,,,the special ship Boskoop.

Brionne, getting to like your find. Have had another look at the passenger list and there is Mr Phillips from Letchworth on the list also going to Ceylon. There is information that another employee of K&L had gone with John and had returned.  If they had been working for the government then K&L probably not have known where they were or what happened to them. Need to think some more about this.

Brionne, found your reference to the "special ship BOSKOOP:

Taken from the : ADMIRALTY WAR DIARIES of WORLD WAR 2
SOUTH AFRICA, CAPETOWN - January to June  1941

Wednesday, 19th March 1941
 Air Operations
Capetown – air escort to BORSKOOP was provided from 1730 to dark.

Friday, 21st March 1941
Air Operations
Port Elizabeth – aircraft patrolled to seaward of special ship BOSKOOP.

The Boskoop is not mentioned again in any of the transcripts although she did sail at least once when J S Taylor was on board?

Have managed to work my way through the movements of the Boskoop.  According to the list they did not anchor in Ceylon on either the outward or return journey.  Don't know about shipping requirements would they be expected to record a port if they anchored?  The final destination was Navlakhi which is just on the border between India & Pakistan.
