Cook? Chief Steward?

Could I get some assistance in developing what these two occupations for a son & father are from a marriage certificate.

Father looks like "Chief Steward RN" ie Royal Navy.

Son is definitely Cook then looks like N.Y.E.F (or possibly T)  New York something?

What date is this? Could he be in a census? It would really help to have more information

The wedding was 1918.  The reason for more information on occupations is because I can't find father on census (with such an obvious name!), the son was George Gale born (from certificate) 1881 and there are just too many George Gales to search.  George Gale and his wife (Olive May Quintell) parted sometime between 1920 & 1945 and we don't know when or where George died.

Groom, I thought the father was Chief Steward RN but was,nt entirely sure. If he was RN he might not be on every (or any) census.

Have tried the N.Y.E.F on possible cruise and shipping lines but found nothing.  Am hoping for another angle i.e is some sort of specific cook!  clutching at straws I know but rootschatters are good at pulling rabbits out of hats.

This might be way out but I wonder whether the initials after Cook might be NZEF - New Zealand Expeditionary Force?

Another problem of course is that if they did both work on board ships, they are likely to be at sea during a census and so may not appear there!

There was some talk of George Gale may have gone to Australia and his wife did not want to go.  I had  not taken this up because it was all a bit vague but your post is really worth looking into, thanks Drosybont.

What a great find Rosie, I had thought along those lines but could'nt find anything, thank you

Just had a quick look, there is a George Gale in the New Zealand Army WWI Nominal Rolls, 1914-1918 Vol. 3: 1 Jan 1917 - 31 Dec 1917 shown as Cook, next of kin Mrs Wood (sister), 17 Plumpton Street, Liverpool, England.  Hope this helps, off to work now!
