Looked at the marriage certificate it shows Sampsons father as John (same as 1841 census).  Also confirms Eliza's father as William McLaughlin.  And as you say Groom, a mariner

Death information no more than you already shown Groom, will probably need certificate to confirm.

Now have Sampson on 1841, 1851 & 1881 census.  Fairly confident that this is the father of the George Gale who married Olive Quintrell.

Probably away at sea in 1861 and 1871.

Update Groom, the S Gale on the Walter H Wilson was not Sampson, because I have found a newspaper clipping November 1886 saying that Sampson Gale (correct address given) died 22 Sept 1886 of liver disease on his outward journey to Calcutta.
