My brick wall with my Cromies /Crombies County Down Rathfriland
« on: Monday 07 March 16 22:30 GMT (UK) »
Was looking for some advice regarding obtaining information about Cromies from Rathfriland area. Being pretty new to researching I am trying to expand my 3rd great gran fathers family and gain more knowledge about or if he had more siblings. Thomas Crombie (1847-1915)and his wife Mary Jane Gibson (1847-1927) came to Ayrshire and settled with their family and had 8 children. To date I only have information regarding Thomas sister Elizabeth (1852-1914) and was wondering where I would look to obtain any information or leads. Thomas and Elizabeth's parents are James Crombie and Margaret McCullough

who traces his Cromie family and becomes convinced as they all lived along the same road they must be cousins.     They are more connected to Hilltown.

That’s as far as I can offer, hopefully you may get abreakthrough with ros davies website.  That will leave church records. Ros Davies has her own church section and gives locations eg Familysearch.org, NIFHS, etc and the other source PRONI which you need to exhaust, also has an online guide to Church records.

Thank you very much for the reply and information,...you have given me heaps to work with and try and get my head around. Still relatively new to researching my family tree none the less extremely grateful for your help. I have already noticed the variations in spelling etc as I have a Scottish census with Thomas Cromie living 2 doors down from his son James Crombie,...in the previous census both were Cromie.

Kind regards
Gary Crombie

There were Cromies still living in the area in 1960s - I went to school (Banbridge Academy) with an Anne and a Ruth (that I can remember) and there were others. Enquiries to  local newspapers (eg Banbridge Chronicle and Banbridge Leader) might find some with memories
