the only information i have is who he married and his son being my grandad Robert Paterson Gilchrist b 1921, and i think he was a coal miner in Haggs

If you don't have the marriage certificate it may be an idea to get that to take you further back.  Have you tried Scotlands people web site.

As Rosie said best thing would be to download his marriage certificate on www.scotlandspeople.gov
and that will give you the names of their parent's to start you off.
Possible match for a marriage in Stirling 1904 for a John Gilchrist to a Mary Paterson ...There is a tree on Ancestry with some names of their family but I would check the marriage first
