Searching for Details of William Clark (born Inverness)
« on: Wednesday 09 March 16 15:15 GMT (UK) »
What is the best way of trying to trace details/dates etc. of a fallen WW1 relation?  The War Memorial in his town of Birth does not carry his name, but the Family were not living in that area at the time of the War, they were still in Scotland, but further North.  Have no idea of his regiment.  The only details are;  William Clark, born c1881 in Daviot, Inverness-shire, Scotland.  His parents names were Donald & Sarah Clark.  Is it a case of going through the list of W. Clark's on the CWWGC site, or is there a better place to start?  Appreciate any advice. Thank you.

With such a common name yes.
You could look for local papers where his parents were living or where he was living if he was married at the time.

I'm trying to rule out/in a Sergeant W Clark, who is mentioned on the War Memorial at Resolis, Ross-shire, but lists him as being in 'Canadian & other Forces'.  I had presumed (perhaps wrongly) that as William was from Inverness he would have ended up joining the Highlanders, Seaforth or Gordon Regiment, but maybe barking up the wrong tree with that assumption.

Saying that, there are only 6 William Clark's showing on Service Returns from Scotlands People, although on looking closer at one of them, it gives a service number, but no other details such as parents names etc., so not really any further on going down that road.

He could have gone into any Regiment or Corps but you could filter down to anyone over 34 in 1914 in a Scottish Regt then those with no age given in a Scottish Regt.
I think the local papers are still the best bet.
