« on: Friday 11 March 16 03:12 GMT (UK) »
Folks,
Between 1803 and 1810 James and Jane Bishop baptise 5 children at St Mary,Rotherhithe however i can't see a marriage to match.A transcription shows mother as Ann but original clearly has Jane.Tried A*******y,familysearch and Archersoftware with negative result.
Any assistance greatly accepted.

Haven't been able to find a marriage, but it looks like James Bishop was buried 27/7/1834 aged 62 years at St Mary Rotherhithe. It says he had been living at Princes Street, Lower Surrey Place, and was a Ropemaker.
regards.

Remember that marriages traditionally took place in the parish where the bride was living or came from. But then more often than not the couple settle where the groom was living, as he has work there.
So the marriage, on that basis, could be anywhere.

Also, do you know if these children are their only children, or could they have had older children baptised elsewhere and then moved to Rotherhithe by 1803?  If the burial found is the right chap, then he would have been over 30 when first child that has been found was born.

Sibling search drew a blank for more children, looks like this couple will have to wait.
Thank you both.

James and Jane Bishop had at least 12 children between 1790 and 1809, only some of whom were baptised at Rotherhithe. I'm descended from Timothy (born & bapt at Rotherhithe in 1804). I've been looking for years and have not yet found of marriage of James & Jane that I could be sure was them! James was a mariner turned merchant, son of John & Elizabeth Bishop. He died in Gibraltar in 1829. Jane went to live with her married daughter, Anna Maria Gibbons, and died in 1847 aged 78 in Warren Street, London (where the underground station is now!). Another contributor on RootsChat that I have corresponded with is descended from Edward Bishop, another son of J&J. He's in Australia. He told me that Jane was Jane Campbell - his mother was Edward's gt granddaughter and family members were sure that was her name. He thought the family originated in Devon. I've not yet pursued these lines myself. How are you connected to James & Jane?

Nicola,
My connection is from James' son,George b 1807 and his wife,Matilda Emily Wells.George died in 1848 and in 1853 Matilda and her four children arrived in Sydney,Australia. Her second daughter,Ada Matilda married Peter Charters in 1861 becoming my wife's great great aunt.
I haven't chased up the Bishops to any great extent,in fact i have done very little on this tree for about a year, though recent hints from Ancestry have had me going back recently.
If i can help in any way just ask.
Regards,
Eric

Thanks Eric - now I know what happened to George! The only children of James and Jane I haven't been able to track down so far are:
James Cawthorne Bishop (b1790)
Harriette Ann Bishop (b1794)
Jane Bishop (b1799)

Happy to send through details of the others with marriages/ death dates if you would like them. Grateful for any info on the Bishops - they were quite wealthy merchants by the look of it but the money seems to have disappeared once James got his hands on it - I have some Chancery documents that make interesting reading...looks like he tried to cheat his children and his late brother's children out of their inheritance!

You and me both - there's a likely candidate in June Quarter of 1844 - George aged 35 in St Mary Newington, which is where he was in the 1841 census...but that does leave a questionmark over baby James...!
