Need Help with Place Name
« on: Saturday 12 March 16 12:26 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

John Miller married Ann Hunter(from Kilmadock Parish) on 25 April 1802. John was a teacher at the place attached. Would be grateful if someone can tell me where this place is.

Thanks,
Mags

Ev, that would fit well with the marriage banns also being read in Dunblane https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY3Q-WYD

Hello All,

Thanks. Unsure what happened to this couple. Their daughter, Ann, married Thomas Johnstone Aitken(NOT the famous surgeon) and spent her married life in and around Ecclesmachan, West Lothian. She died at Ecclesmachan in 1868. Census returns show her born Dunblane, Perthshire. She is my 3x GGM.
Thanks again,
Mags

Mags

I think, not suprisingly, that John and Ann (Hunter) are buried at Ecclesmachan Parish Churchyard. They must have moved there not long after their marriage and a number of children showing as born there.

There looks to be a surviving stone and the transcription is still legible. https://billiongraves.com/grave/Ann-Hunter-Miller/5459046#

Some basic details:

John Miller, schoolmaster died 2 April 1847
Ann Hunter, aged 68 years, died 5 April 1811
William, aged 3 years, died 5 April 1811

You can register on Billion Graves for free and view the photo that has been included for them.

...And here they are in the Village for 1841:

John Miller 60 School Master Of The Parish b. Scotland
Ann Miller 60 b. Scotland
John Gray 12

Address: Ecclesmachan Village

A listing for John Miller in the 1837 PO Directory for Ecclesmachan http://digital.nls.uk/directories/browse/pageturner.cfm?id=85592224&mode=transcription

Hello All,

Wow! Thank you. Would you believe that I live a couple of miles from that cemetery? I have been there a number of times looking for their daughter's husband, Thomas Johnstone Aitken. I have also taken CWGC photographs.

Just shows we miss what is under our noses sometimes!
A trip to the cemetery next week I think.

Me again.

Monica, in my excitement, didn't read the dates. Did Ann die in 1811 or is that a typo? A really old mother!?

Thanks
Mags

Sorry  :P

Ann Hunter's date of death is given as 22 September 1849.

What do you have on the rest of John and Ann's children? Wandering whether as you are wondering around the cemetery, you might also find other connected family there too.

Janet 1803 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTGK-FY4
Mary 1805 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTGK-FY9
John 1810 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTGK-HY5
Thomas 1815 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTGK-FJ7

We also had the son William born 1807-8 who died age 3 in 1811 and your ancestor Ann.

ADDED: Have now looked through the listings for the cemetery on Billion Graves site. Can't see any other Millers, Hunters or Aitken. These listings are for images of gravestones only. Likely lots of other possibilities but stones have not survived over the years, or there wasn't a stone from the burial.
