James Loftus and Rosanna marriage help
« on: Sunday 13 March 16 13:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

A real long shot I think but I would love some help or tips on how to find the marriage of James Loftus, a Cooper, b Co. Mayo abt 1797 who married a Rosanna b Co. Mayo abt 1813 (no surname) around 1833.  I don't know what Parish!

Their first child John was born in Wolverhampton in 1834.  However James was married before as he also had a son Patrick born either 1811 or 1819 also in Co.Mayo.

Any comments would be very welcome :)

Many thanks

Val

Hello,
Just a couple of comments at the moment.
I can see the family in 1851 but I haven't checked further.

Where do you have son Patrick? Presumably he wouldn't be born 1811 as John would only be 14 yrs.

What was Rosanna's  maiden name.

Have you followed Mary Loftus, lodger? Any clues there?

I have Patrick only confirmed in the 1851 census, however have a marriage in 1840 where he says his age is 21 and James his father is on the marriage record.  He married Bridget McNally and I have lots on her and births of children who all baptised at St. Peter and St. Pauls Catholic church in Wolverhampton.

Interesting about Mary, Lodger.  I've not pursued but will have a look.

Thank you!

Do you know that it is definitely the same James?

Have you checked locally for a marriage for James and Rosanna?

Do you have her maiden name?

Do you have your family in 1841 999, book 4, folio 23, pg 39

They are transcribed as Couftes

Caribbee  Island

James Couftes 40 yrs
Rose Couftes 30 yrs yrs
James Couftes 15 yrs
Ellen Couftes 13 yrs
John Couftes 9 yrs
Charles Couftes   7 yrs
James Couftes 2 yrs
Michl Couftes 11 yrs

You should really get a birth certificate for Rosanna's maiden name.
It may help find a townland or parish for both surnames.

You have been amazing help Hepworth and I am very grateful.  I'd not seen this 1841 census and it's given me leads to a couple more children.

May I ask how you found it?  I'd like to improve the way I search and if I'm missing some great info like this I'd be grateful to learn how to.

Not sure how I can get hold of Rosanna's birth certificate without marriage certificate.  Might have to go visit Wolverhampton Archives and see what St. Peter and Paul's church have in their baptism records for their children.

Sorry, when I say birth certificate, I mean one of the children born in Wolverhampton.
If you are able to search local Baptisms, they may show Rosanna's maiden name, otherwise, the civil birth certificates would be the order.
I did search in quite a few ways on and off and on this occasion it might have been Ros* in Wolverhampton. Using * is often useful.
I then looked through possibilities and you can see how the name was misinterpreted.
Other tips are just by first name, surname, place of birth etc.
I also looked at Free Reg I think, and sadly, I think there are deaths for Ellen and perhaps young James.
