Elizabeth Joungauy b.1799
« on: Tuesday 15 March 16 17:57 GMT (UK) »
Here's a puzzler. I have an ancestor by the name of Elizabeth Joungauy, b.1799. She is the grandmother of Sarah Must (1857-1897), wife of Thomas Jarvis (1859-1897), who perished in the Dixie Street fire.

Here's my query. Does anyone know the origins of the name Joungauy?

Thanks
Rich

Is it her married name or maiden name?

There is one marriage for that surname in 1856 and  one birth in 1866 - both in Bethnal Green

The baptism is transcribed as Janaway and he was the son from the 1856 marriage

The 1856 marriage was between David Joungauy and Sarah Ann Johnson.  David's father was also David - occ corn porter

Hi Rich,
There seem to be a few records around that time for Jonquay, a likely version of Joungauy? Jonquay seems to be a French name if that helps.

Could be a Huguenot (french protestants) french name  JONGUAY/JONQUAY

Relatives? Similar time frame/place?
www.familysearch.org shows a Daniel Jonquay born/chrs in 1797, whose parents were James and Elisabeth.
Ann Maria Jonguay/Jounquay (born 1797)

"Name variants

Prior to about 1755 there was no standardized English spelling. In a situation where French scribes were recording unfamiliar English place names while their English counterparts were dealing with unfamiliar French family names it is inevitable that most names in Huguenot records appear in a number of variant forms.

Example: the family name Jonquay also appears as Junquay, John Quay, Quay, Janquay, Jounquay, Jonquet, Junkaway and Junkway in various records." ((and evidently Janaway!))

She appears to be the daughter of James Jonquay and Elizabeth Bonnick, who married 9 Jun 1794 at St Leonard Shoreditch, this is where Elizabeth and various other children of this couple were baptised.

Wow! Thank you so much for the wealth of information. Sounds like I have another possible Huguenot connection. This would also add a little more weight to my suspicion that my Ferry family link could also be Huguenots, as this and the Ferry link are from the same family links... Joungauy's grandaughter married a Jarvis. My great grandmother was a Ferry and her mother was a Jarvis. Tenuous as it all may be, there seems to be a good circumstantial case for my having Huguenot ancestry.

For the person that asked... This was Elizabeth's maiden name.

Regards
Rich

Elizabeth isn't a direct ancestor, by the way. She was married to George Cecil 1795-1871 and they had a daughter, Sarah Ann Cecil b. c.1830. She married William (?) Must b. c.1825 and they had a daughter Sarah Ann Must, 1857-1897, who married Thomas Jarvis, 1859-1897. They were my great, great, great aunt and uncle.

I have ancestors with the name Jonquay.  Jean Martin born 1697 Bretagne died 1757 Shoreditch, he was a Huguenot.  His son Daniel spelt his name Jonque and his daughter Mary also Jonque.  Jean Martin Jonquay, seems to have maybe altered his name from his fathers (may be due to the diaspora) the father's name was Jean Jeanneaux from Morbihan Bretagne and his father Janne Jeanneaux 1614-1670 Ille et Villain. :-)
