Burial site Staffordshire
« on: Thursday 17 March 16 03:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to locate the burial site of my descendant – Abraham Edward Hodges who died in Dudley, Staffordshire – 22nd July 1889 – and have had no success with Staffordshire records.  He originally came from Birkenhead, Cheshire, but I cannot locate any records in this area either.  Any suggestions please?  Thank you.

I've not found anything for him on FreeREG. Dudley Borough Council's website has a good search facility - http://www2.dudley.gov.uk/burial_records/regenq.asp - but it's just giving me an error message at the moment!

I think maybe you need to be looking in the Rowley Regis area - West Midlands BMD say that his death registration was in R R Sub-District.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!

The link to Dudley burial records is now

http://www.dudley.gov.uk/resident/libraries-archives/archives-and-local-history/resources-services-and-guides/genealogy-research-service/

Be aware that the area around Dudley can be rather a problem for records. Dudley itself was an enclave of Worcestershire surrounded by Staffordshire, except for Dudley Castle which was in Staffordshire. Rowley Regis was in Staffordshire but, like Dudley, was within the Diocese of Worcester rather than Lichfield. Dudley is now Dudley Metropolitan Borough while Rowley Regis is in Sandwell MB.

Thanks for the updated link. You have to click on "I agree" part way down the page, then it will take you to the search page for burials.

Thank you both for the updated information about Staffordshire burials.  I will investigate that website.  It is rather frustrating as I have my gt. grandfather's death certificate, but cannot locate his burial site.  I will let you know the outcome.
