Mary Costigan Death Registration
« on: Saturday 19 March 16 15:15 GMT (UK) »
Hello.

I wonder if someone can kindly help me (again) please?

Mary Costigan (nee Ferns) was baptised on 15th April 1832 in Monasterevan.
On the 1901 census she is a widow, with an understated age of 60 and living with her married daughter, Mary Dowling (nee Costigan) in Drogheda Row.

In 1911 she is aged 78 and residing with her son, Denis Costigan in Old Grange, Monasterevan.

Try as I might, I am unable to find a death registration for her from 1911 onwards. Is anybody able to spot what I might be missing please?

Thank You

Myluck -- I did see that one actually, when I eventually searched on an all district basis - but thought it was too 'out of area'. That's one of the problems with being unfamiliar with a location.

If Abbeyleix is near to Athy Reg Dist - it may explain it. Thank you very much indeed for that clue.

dathai,

You are a person of few words!

Do you mean that the death registered for a Mary Costigan in Abbeyleix in 1911 could be either of the 2 other ladies and not necessarily my Mary Costigan?

I have looked at Abbeyleix on the Townland Database and noticed that it was in Queens County (now Laois). A county adjacent to Kildare where my Mary Costigan was living.

I am having to interpret what you mean by kindly giving me that link. So if that is what you mean -- then you could well be correct and my Mary's death registration is missing or very badly mistranscribed.
(Maybe she is still alive!)

Thank you dathai.

I live in hope that a missing lady in our tree born 1923 is still alive but I don't think Mary COSTIGAN will be!!!

First of all it is about 35km (21miles from Monasterevin to Abbeyleix but more importantly there is a hospital where should Mary have been ill she may have gone to and had she died be registered there. Still dathai may also have something!   ;)

I can see Mary's marriage in 1854 in Monasterevin on Feb18 1854
Denis COSTIGAN to Mary FERNS both give address as Old Grange which ties to census returns
They had at least nine children

LINK to 1901 census
LINK to 1911 census noting daughter Margaret married Edward DONOHUE May 04 1855~
so nephew probably should read grandson for Edward DONOHUE aged 11

Thank you myluck. Good point about a hospital - I suppose this hospital might not have been 21 miles away (which seems quite a distance) - but could have just been situated towards the edge of the Abbeyleix Reg. District. Maybe I need to investigate that.

The only way I will find out is to send for that certificate (which will be the 6th certificate I have sent for in the last couple of weeks. -- We're going to be eating bread and jam at this rate.) I am trying to write my husband's family history for him and his siblings --- I might try getting away with 'Mary Costigan, nee Ferns sadly died sometime after 1911' -- but it doesn't sound quite right though does it!

Just checked the Costigan - Ferns family tree-- yes I have 9 children recorded as well (that's a relief!) Thank you so much for looking at that and discovering the correct relationship for Edward Donohoe.
