I hadn't, *Sandra*, so much appreciated too, thanks. It confirms, as suspected, he was the William at Bergen Street. He obviously thought he was a year younger than he actually was.

Perhaps this is just a coincidence, but looking at the 1927 Newark City Directory the only Lilley names were:

Robert H Lilley, slsman,   r 275 Ridge
Samuel J Lilley, plasterer,  h 149 Elizabeth av
William Lilley, plasterer,  r 637 Bergen
William Lilley, lab,  r 109 Thomas
William Lilley, plasterer, h 103 Emmet

Is there any possibility that the Bergen Street plasterer could be related to the Emmet Street plasterer?  Perhaps a father or son (after a quick look, he doesn't appear to be "Emmet Street's" son).

Looking at a current map, the addresses are all within 1 1/2 miles of each other - but perhaps Newark was a small town at the time, or Irish folks (if they all were Irish) just settled in the same neighbourhood.

Update:  It appears that Samuel may have been born in 1882 in Belfast, Ireland.

Thanks for your interest and suggestions.

William Lilley of Bergen Street's father was a Robert Lilley, as mentioned in my opening post of this thread. Robert remained in Ireland.

I believe Samuel was the chap found in 1901 Belfast at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Shankhill/Blaney_Street/947810/ and that he is the same chap who married a Lizzie Tedford in Belfast in 1902. His father was a Philip Lilley. There was no known link between this Lilley group and William Lilley of Bergen Street's family.

Will cross check the others, but no obvious links at moment.
