Caleb Jones
« on: Monday 21 March 16 17:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am looking for any information on Caleb Jones 1712-1784, he is my 7th great-grandfather. I believe that Caleb was born and died in Holt, Denbigh, (Denbighshire) Wales. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you. Terri Jones-Makolondra

Welcome to Rootschat!   ;D

Caleb was buried in Holt 14 Jan 1784, noted as of the parish of Overton which is Flintshire.

When his son Caleb was baptised & buried in April 1743, they were living at Escoyd.
You'll be running into problems here with parishes with the same name in different counties, and until 1849 Holt was part of the diocese of Chester to add more confusion.

Thank you! The information you provided is helpful. As you may already know finding a Jones in Wales is like finding a needle in a haystack ;) I haven't been able to get beyond Caleb for months! Thanks again. Terri

just having another look & this looks like him

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F17K-TXK

The date is that of the licence, not of the marriage itself. He is noted as a yeoman on the licence, aged 25 'or thereabouts', Margaret noted as 24 'or thereabouts', both noted as of Holt in the county of Denbigh. The other male name on the licence looks like John Dodd who may be Margaret's father, but could be a brother.

Thank you again for the information. But do these dates coincide with the dates I have for Caleb's son Richard Jones (1740-1830), my 6th great-grandfather who immigrated to, first Canada and than, America in about 1790?

I'm also having trouble moving beyond Caleb and identifying his parents. It seems Wales didn't keep thorough records prior to the 1800's. Any suggestions where I might look?

Sincerely, Terri Jones

In the parishes of Wales, as in England & Scotland, records were kept but they may not have survived & not all records are online. If you look at the link on Holt I gave, it shows that records from 1661 are available on microfilm at the Denbighshire & Flintshire record offices, at the library in Wrexham and at the NLW in Aberystwyth.

Although Caleb is shown as of he parish of Holt at his marriage, this does not mean that he was born or baptised there. When his wife Margaret was buried 11 May 1772, they were living in the parish of Overton.

You can access scans of the Holt registers via FindMyPast. I've had a look at some of the ones around 1713 & 1714 & there are pages which are so faded that they are illegible in part.
This copy of a register from Kenwyn in Cornwall from a similar period shows that the cleric did not always record the first name of the child baptised.
