Census help!
« on: Monday 21 March 16 17:42 GMT (UK) »
Bit of a cheeky request if possible.

Trying to find out my 3 X Great Grandmothers maiden name.  I thought that I would be able to find this via the Durham Bishops transcripts but after trawling through them I'm still at a loss.

I've tried looking at the marriages in the area she was born and also where my 2 X Great Grandmother was born but still no sign of the marriage.  Thought my 3 X Great Grandfathers birth place might provide some luck but this is where I run into difficultly, I'm really struggling to make out his place of birth on census returns.  On all the census where place if birth is given there is a different name given each time, warenford shows up in one but I really can't read the rest.

I wondered if anyone who has census access could take a look for me and see what they can make out for his place if birth.

His name is William Knox born 1799, living in Seaton Deleval, Earsdon in 1841,1851,1861 and 1871.

Grateful for any tips or suggestions.

Is it possible that one place could actually have been "Horton Grange" and the other entry another place North of that called "Tranwell"?  (both are North from Wideopen in the Newcastle-on-Tyne area.  Hope this helps! patrexjax

On which census do you find his place of birth as Warenford?

Trying to find out my 3 X Great Grandmothers maiden name.

Surely the easiest way to find for certain is to send for the birth certificate of their son Thomas? He is 3 months old in 1841 and 11 in 1851, birthplace Hartley. So there is only one candidate - freeBMD shows Thomas Knox, 4 q. 1840, Tynemouth 25, 388.

Mmmm  ??? ??? Now totally confused about the Warenford thing and to where I got that from.  Spent hours yesterday flicking through web pages looking at Baptisms and census returns, wonder if it was a baptism.  I know I googled where Warenford was and saw it wasn't far from Embleton, which is where Margaret wife came from so though that was a likely candidate.

Not sure about the Horton, Tranwell suggestion.  Margaret, Williams wife was from Embleton and so was their daughter, my direct ancestor Elizabeth, later children born around the Horton/ Seaton Deleval area.  Seems more likely that they originated further north, marrying there and having their first few children there before moving further south and continuing the family is n the same place and remains there.

Jen that is a very good suggestion, I get too excited thinking I've sorted it I sometime fail to look at the obvious.
