Moses Carter
« on: Tuesday 22 March 16 16:05 GMT (UK) »
Moses Carter lived in Histon Cambridgeshire from about 1803 till 1860. The 1841 census gives his birth as 1806 born Cambridgeshire and 1851 gives his birth as 1803 born Cottenham, Cambs. In both census he was living on his own in Clay Street Histon. His death record gives his birth as 1801.
Next door, in 1851, lived James Carter (75) and his daughter Susannah (30) and in 1841 they lived just a few doors away.

I can not find a record for the birth of Moses or his parents.
Can anybody help?

There will be no record of his birth as it is before civil registration began. Hopefully he was christend and there will be a record of that.
Have you been unsuccessful in Parish registers for both All Saints, Cottenham and St Andrews, Histon?

Hi

I have tried all the local parishes without success. I did wonder if he was maybe baptised with another name, but that would be very difficult to trace.

Thanks for looking and your help.

There's a baptism at Cottenham, 6 Aug 1775, of a James Carter.
See FreeReg, which says parents are James + Ann (PR) or Thomas + Ann (BT)
Since the other Carter baptisms there at the time have Thomas as the father, that seems the more likely to me.
A marriage at Cottenham, 19 December 1798, James Carter + Susannah Chivers
Two baptisms there to James + Susannah
25 Aug 1799 James Carter (who possibly is in Histon in the census)
12 April 1801 Sarah Carter (sadly buried in Cottenham, 3 June same year)
Then nothing.

In Histon there is a double baptism, 25 September 1836, seemingly a long while after the births
Jemima Carter + Rebecca Carter
parents James (a Gardener) and Susan
That daughter of James you mentioned who is with him in the census was actually Jemima

A burial of Susan Carter in Histon in 1832, age 56, may be mother of Moses
James Carter buried Histon, 17 Feb 1854, age 78

No baptism of Moses found to date

Thank you. In 1851 James occupation is given as  Retired Cordwainer. Odd.....

Both James and Moses were Gardeners; could this mean 'Market Gardeners' ? Maybe they worked together.... just guesswork.  Jemima is listed as a Gardener in 1871 census.

Thanks again.

Yes, I have read the article which, as you say, is very interesting. Although it states that James and Susan are his parents, no record appears to exist.  If true, and I guess it is, then Moses was a first cousin of Stephen Chivers, the founder of Chivers Jams.
