Confusing Entry on the 1939
« on: Wednesday 23 March 16 11:15 GMT (UK) »
Can any 1939 "experts" give me their comments on the entry below please?

I have the gentleman down as "Cecil Ferdinand Edward DAVID" - I gleaned this from his daughter's marriage certificate (1945). The original "David" appears to be crossed out but a capitalised "DAVID" and, apparently, by a different hand, "GRUNENBERGER" appears to have been added - Why? Are the entries prior to the name or on the subsequent page of any relevance?

My first thought was that he had shyed away from a germanic sounding name but it looks like his father, who was born in Paris, was using the name "David" when he ran a coffee house in Battersea as long ago as 1891.

Also, can anyone read the bit in brackets after the words GPO Postman? It's been transcribed as "(As Claimer Medical?)" which doesn't make much sense.

Thanks

That's odd, isn't it?

He appears to have been born (1896), baptised (1897), educated (1901), married (1923) and died (1984) as Cecil David, with middle names not entirely consistent but usually including Ferdinand and/or Edward.

As Cecil E David he was on the electoral roll residing at 86 Colney Hatch Lane, Muswell Hill, 1946-1962.

Looks more like 'Medical' than 'Midland' to me - perhaps he had more than one job?

Baptism
All Saints Battersea Park
Cecil ferdinand Edward David
baptism 9 Feb 1897
parents Lucien & Abigail
father's occ Coffee House Keeper
address 126 Battersea Park Road

then is this his death reg??
Cecil edward G David
born 22 Nov 1896
death reg 1984
worthing
18 2251

if so - then was the "G" on death reg a mistranscription or was it for "Grunenberger"

I would be tempted to send for death cert to see what full name was

The question is:   What date was the name altered?

1) The "F" and "310' seem contemporary - there's another name added in green with the same number further down the page.

2) The '1/2 M.C LA 30/6(?)/63' looks contemporary with the added "DAVID' - lighter weight writing although what happened in 1963; he died, as avm228 says in Worthing (1984) although he moved north at some stage, presumably to be near his daughter. His wife died in Denton (G-Manchester) in 1965.

3) What's going on on the next page? Identical dates/references but Rose has no amendments!

Yes, I have that. He witnessed his daughter's marriage and signed as "Cecil Edward David" although he gave his name as "Cecil Edward Ferdinand David". Perhaps he was trying to keep up with his wife on the number of names front  ;D?
