Image looks like Frances Footer - 15 July 1863 - St Mary, Marylebone.  William's occupation is Tiler.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi again, Trish too!…and to BumbleB again
Many thanks for that as well…that marriage and the subsequent death registration for Frances seems to fit just about all of the pieces of this jigsaw together.  Perhaps William went to London to seek his fortune as a tiler, married Frances FOOTER there, brought her back to Haverhill, where he took up his duties helping his widowed mother Charlotte with the Clothier's business after the death of his father in 1855.  Doesn't look as though they did very well with it, but perhaps the death of Frances in the same year as the bankruptcy proceedings indicated that life in the HAWES family was very much in turmoil then…
Isn't it facinating how all these pieces of further evidence illuminate more clearly how particular events shaped things for a family in a certain way…

Trish,
More wonderful supporting evidence, thanks so much, more frantic posts crossing out there somewhere.  This almost reminds me of those painting books I had when I was a little boy.  The pages were white and blank until you applied a wetted paint brush; then all the colours magically appeared.  The picture of the HAWES family in 19thC Haverhill has just been coloured vividly in…

Just started munching a hot cross bun, and had a sudden thought - could "tiler" be a Suffolk phonetic pronunciation of the word "tailor" for the registrar of the wedding in Marylebone, London.  I'd like to think so, seems a much more reasonable explanation of his occupation than William suddenly going up on roofs for a living...

1861 Census Frances is a Servant in Haverhill.
So I guess that how they met.

1841 Census
HO107/1013/15/Ingham
Thomas Footer, 25, Builder
Ann Footer, 30
Martin Footer, 2
Priscilla Footer, 7 Mths

Yes I remember those books too ;D

EDIT, yes I though Tiler may have been misheard for Tailor.

Trish,
Thanks very much for supplying the probable reason behind the how and why of William and Frances meeting.  I wonder why they travelled off to London to tie the knot - maybe somebody in their families didn't approve locally, though of course we know that Frances' elder sister Priscilla was there to witness the happy event, thanks to your super sleuthing…!

Annes,
Thanks so much for these extra important details of the HAWES family in Haverhill!  The forename King was a popular choice amongst the family, has made it slightly easier to track down the correct individuals.  I'm pretty sure that this King was a much older brother to William…
Keith
…more messages crossing, many thanks for these other HAWES PR's from Haverhill.  I wonder what happened to Charles Ellis, as he doesn't appear at the family home in the 1871 Census...
