 Hi Jomcd967

I have never been able to find James's will. Until a few weeks ago knew very little about him apart from his occupation and the name of his wife and his immediate family. I  have not been  able to find him in the 1841 census  nor  to find out where he died. Since he was obviously not short of money he must have a headstone  in some local cemetery . I'm wondering if any of the death notices give his location in 1850. Looking for someone with a name like Smith in England in the 1800's  is not an easy undertaking!. Thanks again for your wonderful research.

Regards Orkrad.

Hi Orkrad,
see previous post....
James burial in London Burial on Ancestry
"James Smith  buried 5 Feb 1850, of Kenton Street, St George Bloomsbury (Note son Poynder was still at this address in 1851.

1841
1841 - Sidmouth Street, St Pancras
James Smith, 63, solict, not born in Middlesex
Paynde Smith, 25,
Mitilda Smith, 35
(Note - not living with second wife/partner Harriet and daughter Harriet Sarah).

I have looked in all the usual places for his will and would be very surprised if he didn't have one - have you tried contacting Coopers Hall for further information?

Thanks once again. Will check out that burial on Ancestry when I next visit the public library. I had a quick look online at St George's Bloomsbury. It looks very high church for someone whose family were non conformists! However all his children were baptised at St Margaret Lothbury so maybe his wife was an Anglican.

Your help  has been tremendous.

Regards Orkrad

Hi Orkrad,

Have a "Google" about non-conformists, I think you will find that for James to hold any kind of official office he could not be a practising non-conformist as there were certain rules pertaining to that at the time - I'm far from knowledgeable about it but it worth having a read.

Happy to help any time  :)

"In England, Nonconformists were restricted from many spheres of public life and many forms of public educational and social benefits were not available to them until well into the nineteenth century. For example, attendance at an English university had required conformity to the Church of England before University College London was founded (as the first university to be established on an entirely secular basis), compelling Nonconformists to fund their own Dissenting Academies.

Some of these Nonconformists were more broadly considered radical; for example, advancing progressive causes. The Quakers, for example, were the first religious group to denounce slavery. The Methodists were powerful advocates of women’s rights and the Unitarians campaigned for better conditions for factory workers.

Nonconformists were forced to worship outside the City of London, meaning that many places important to them were located in Islington, just outside of the city walls. These include Wesley’s Chapel and Bunhill Fields."

A few more tidbits....

Sept 1, 1826 The Inspector & Literary Review, Volume 1
"At Allhallows, London Wall, Mr James Smith, of Coopers Hall, Basinghall Street, to Harriet Sophia, daughter of Mr Richard Webb Jupp, of Carpenters Hall, London Wall" (This marriage is on Ancestry and so is Harriet's birth, also registered as a nonconformist at Dr Williams Library).

1841 - Charlotte Street, Bloomsbury St George
Harriet Smith, 35, Ind
Elizabeth Smith, 20
Janetta Smith, 20
Harriet Smith, 14

Can't find any of the girls in 1851, but Alfred marries in Clifton, Gloucs, and a death registered in Clifton, 1859, for a Harriet Sophia Smith
1861 - 13 South Parade, Clifton,  Gloucs
Janetta Smith, 42
Elizabeth Smith, 40
Harriet Smith, 33

1871 the three sisters are at Val Plaisant Egytian House, St Helier, Jersey, and
1881 they are at 2 Nile Street Walcot Somerset

An odd notice...1854, Gentlemans Magazine, Vol 41, page 108
"Aged 38, Poynder, the eldest surviving son of the late James Smith, Esq, of Coopers Hall"
And...
List of Carthusians (previous students at Charterhouse school)...
Smith, Poynder, 1826, b1814
And...
The Gazette 1836
"Notice is hereby given, that the partnership between James Smith, Archibald Weir and Frederick Bissextile Smith, of Coopers Hall, Basinghall Street, in the City of London, Attorneys and Solicitors, ceased on the 16th day of December last, as far as regards the said Frederick Bissextile Smith".

None of which helps find Sarah....such a shame we can't find James' will....

Thanks Jo for all the extra titbits. ( what a lovely word! ) I didn't have the details about James Smith's second marriage only that his wife was Harriet. I have the distinct feeling that I read somewhere that her daughter was recorded as deaf and dumb-- but I didn't record this. I do know that her Harriet's will was disputed by her sister Janetta as she left some of her property to her Nz family.
