Jeremiah Crowley - Castletownbere
« on: Monday 28 March 16 13:45 BST (UK) »
I'm researching my Great Grandfather Jeremiah Crowley and his wife Margaret( or Margarite). They lived in or near Castletownbere. I have them on both the 1901 and 1911 census. in 1901 Jeremiah was 60 and listed as a shopkeeper. Margarite was 40. In 1911 Jeremiah, who is now 70, is listed as a caretaker and curator. Margarite is 49.

I'm trying to find a birth certificate for Jeremiah so I can get the names of his parents and maybe move a step further back. I'm hoping a marriage cert or a birth cert for Margarite will give me information on her Maiden name and the names of her parents. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

It looks as though Margarite was Margarite Sullivan

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so for earlier dates it's a matter of searching for church records to see if baptisms survive, etc.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks soo much Heywood. I've had a look at that entry, unfortunately my Latin isn't so good but I see they have a dispensation - I'm assuming that's what it is - allowing them to marry and I'm wondering why that would be? Maybe Jeremiah was married before giving his age. I'm assuming the witnesses, James (or Seamus?) Crowley and Regenia? Sullivan are maybe parents or siblings of the two getting married? Regenia sounds a very fancy name for way back then. I'm going to ask a priest in my local parish to translate the Latin for me regarding the dispensation.

Can you tell me if Killa is a townland near Castletownbere? I think Ardra is also a townland adjoining Castletownbere. Also for the witnesses or parents, whichever, it states as birthplace or residence, Island - is this a reference to Bere Island do you think? Thanks so much for your help. I'm not quite sure where to go from here to try to get birth certs to discover parents names. Any ideas?  ;D

Re the marriage

You have the bridegroom and bride
Jeremiah Crowley and Margarite Sullivan

Residences: B Killa ( I think that may be Ballynakilla and Ardra

Their parents- Jeremiah Crowley and Roger Sullivan - same residences

Priest John O'Connell

Witnesses John Sullivan and Catherine Donigan/Dougan ??? Both from Bere Island
The endings on the names make it more difficult - 'of Roger' becomes Rogerii

The dispensation looks to be regarding consanguinity. It mentions 3rd and 4th degree

I found a simple explanation here

I would confirm this  with your priest  :)

As you will notice there are many Sullivans.

Looking at the parish record there is a baptism for a Margaritawith father Roger and mother Johanna Neil ( I think) from Ardra.

I must stress that this  is all speculative. A civil birth certificate  for a child would give you Margarite's maiden name.

You might find a baptism for Jeremiah on that site.

Wow Heywood - you've gotten me further than I ever expected - Thanks soo much. I'd have been searching for Regina for ever LOL! Roger still seems a very English name for an Irishman in the 1800's. I'm delighted to find it in our family tree though because it's a favourite name of mine. Could I just ask one further question of you? On the record it states records for 1876 but at top of page where baptism is recorded it says 1860. Should I take the 1860 as correct? Actually I've answered my own question - yes it is 1860 because if she got married in 1880 and was 20 years old then 1860 would be year of birth.
I'll search that site for my Great Grandfathers birth certificate. Thanks once again, I really appreciate your help.
