Eliza Preece married in Holmer 1865
« on: Monday 28 March 16 15:34 BST (UK) »
Eliza or Elizabeth/ Lizzie Preece married Felix Golden in Holmer, Hereford in August 1865. Her father is recorded as John Preece.
From the 1871 and 81 census in Brecon, Eliza was born in Hereford between 1847 to 1851. Due to the large number of Preece records I have been unable to trace her or family any further back.
Any help much appreciated.
Cheers
Jonno

I wonder if the George Preece whose marriage is on the same reference is a sibling  :)

It may not help but I think this is likely to be the George Preece who married Sarah in the census in 1871.  He was also living in Holmer in 1861 as a lodger

George Preece 33 Labourer b Wellington, Herefordshire
Sarah Preece 32 b St John, Herefordshire
William Preece 5 b Holmer
George Preece 3b All Saints
James Preece 3 Months b Holmer

Thanks for the replies. Had a search of 1851 & 61 census with no result for an Eliza and George combination with John Preece as father.
I will have to order a copy marriage certificate to discover John's occupation.
Cheers

Finally got round to ordering 2 marriage certificates for Eliza Preece and Felix Golden.
For some reason the couple appeared to have been married twice.
1. 29/08/1868 at the parish Church of Holmer, Hereford. Felix Golden, (Bachelor of full age, Hairdresser residing Holmer, Father Thomas Golden, Publican.) married Eliza Preece, (age 19, spinster of Holmer, father John Preece a shoemaker). Witnesses Joseph Carter and Elizabeth Lawrance.
2. 05/12/1879 at the English Independent Chapel in Merthyr Tydfil. Felix Golden (38 year old widower, Hairdresser of Ship Street Brecon, Father Thomas Golden (deceased) Publican) married Elizabeth Preece (29 year old spinster of Cefn Coed Vaynor, father John Preece (deceased) Cordwainer). Witnesses Andrew Baxter and Mary Hamlyn.
Im struggling to understand the double marriage and the widower spinster status. However it does allow me to find Eliza's family in census records as her father is a shoemaker. Again there is something a little unusual. On the 1851 census John Preece and Elizabeth preece are recorded as having daughters Eliza 4 and Elizabeth 10 months.
Has Felix married his sister in law? Were the girls actually sisters or had the Parents taken an illegitimate grandchild as their own?
Any advice gratefully received.

Correction to above. First marriage year was in fact 1865.

There is a death of GRO index of an Eliza Preece age 28 in 1875 in  Brecknock which would fit the first Eliza if this was the case of John marrying Eliza's sister in 1879

The GRO Birth index lists the birth of an Eliza Preece in 1846 and Elizabeth Preece in 1850 both in Hereford with mother's maiden name Bullock and this could be the parents marriage https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N66K-PJ1 So the girls that Felix married might well have been sisters

Thanks Kay,
Those birth dates match up with the brides ages on the marriage certificates. Still a very unusal set up though?
The Bullock maiden name puts another branch on my family tree and I know from census records that Elizabeth Bullock was born in Dilwyn Herefordshire in 1814.
Thanks again
