Kennedys and Elders of Derry
« on: Tuesday 29 March 16 02:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with some info. Im trying to get some info on my kennedys and Elders of Derry

Henry Kennedy born about 1836 was born in Derry and died in 1908 in Glasgow, Scotland. His parents are listed as john kennedy and sarah ann brown. I cant find anything on his parents or siblings. his wife was mary elder, born in derry too about 1843 and died in glasgow in 1904. her parents are listed as john elder and mary kane. someone has said she died in 1893 in ireland but i have no evidence of that.

On henrys death cert it says his parents are john kennedy and sarah kane so i dont know if maybe the names are mixed up which is making it harder. i know henry and mary married sometime in Coleraine in the 1860s cause some children were born in Ireland and then some over here in Glasgow after 1867.

If anyone can help me find anything on the Kennedys or Elders that would be great. in 1891 glasgow theres a john elder born about 1872 from ireland living with mary and henry and is down as visitor.

on the census their children are listed:

John Kennedy 24 Ireland
William Kennedy 19 Glasgow
Henry Kennedy 17 Glasgow
Elizabeth Kennedy 14 Glasgow
Annie Sarah Kennedy 12 Glasgow
Maggie Kennedy 10 Glasgow
Robina Kennedy 8 Glasgow
James Kennedy 6 Glasgow
Alexander Kennedy 4 Glasgow
Jessie Kennedy 6mo Glasgow
(also) Jane Ramsay (Kennedy) 26 Ireland with her daughter Mary 4mo Govan, Glasgow

In 1901 the family are in Glasgow still and their daughter Mary Kennedy no Brierley is living with them with her 3 children, she was born in Ireland too. On ancestry theres been some people listing at mary elder and mary kennedy being born in antrim

Thanks

Gary

In the 1864 civil marriage record, bachelor Henry and spinster Mary both gave their address as the townland of Ballylintagh, in the civil parish of Aghadowey, groom and both fathers were labourers, a Robert Hutchinson and Mary Dunlop witnessed.

Griffith's Valuation shows a John Elder and Henry Kennedy in Ballylintagh, print date for the area was 1859, you can search for it here:

Edited to add: BTW, Ballylintagh was also the address given in a civil birth record for an unnamed daughter on 2 May 1864 and a daughter Mary on 21 December 1867.

Another forum member with a user name the same as the aforementioned civil parish (Aghadowey) has posted before about Elders and Kennedys in the context of Ballylintagh, they might have information...  :)

Thanks for sending me the link, gaffy  ;)

I do have lots of information on this family but mine differs slightly.

Henry Kennedy, son of John Kennedy & Sarah Ann Kane, died 1908 in Govan. His wife Mary (nee Elder) died in Govan in 1907- her parents John Elder & Mary Kane. They married 7 June 1864 in Coleraine Registry Office.

I have 11 children-
Jane (2 May 1864 Ballylintagh), John (c1865 Ireland), Mary (21 Dec.1867 Aghadowey dist.), Mary (1869 Govan), William (16 Oct.1871 Govan), Henry (12 Sept.1874 Govan), Elizabeth "Eliza" (29 Sept.1876 Govan), Sarah Ann "Annie" (6 June 1879 Govan), Margaret "Maggie" (23 May 1881 Govan), Robina (14 Aug.1883 Govan), James "Jimmy" (26 Sept.1884 Govan).

could the John Elder be Marys father. is there anyway to find out if there was other elders or what elders were born there. In the census over here theres an elder with us im not sure how hes related to the family. Also Henry Kennedy if it was mine hed maybe be about 15-25 so theres a possibility its him.

thats the right info youve got :) My great great gran is Robina.

The thread wasa good read, wonder if theres a connection there someway but how is there anyway to find out if there is

theres a tree on ancestry that has a mary kennedy born in the 1830s to the same parents are henry but she died in Australia in 1857 but I dont have any evidence that there is a connection or a misunderstanding with names. She married a Daniel Dwelly

On the other thread you said
there is a possible sister of Henry called Mary that died in Australia in 1857.
