Granny Colquhoun and other farm workers
« on: Tuesday 29 March 16 12:54 BST (UK) »
Theses photos of my Granny Colquhoun (Jane Hambley) and other farm workers were taken in the early 1900's. I know from the 1911 Census my Granny was working at Dalmuir Farm, Old Kilpatrick and in 1913 she was a farm worker in Cardross, Dunbartonshire.  I know this is a long shot but has anyone ever seen any of the photos before and possibly know where they were taken? Thank you.

Great photos, but unfortunately a long shot unless there are names on the back of the photos that might shed some light or tie them to your 1911 Census.  Any idea where she worked in Cardross?

Don

Her address on her marriage certificate from 1913 is Ardoch Cottage, Cardross. She was 24 when she married. It's difficult to say what age she is in the photos. Thank you.

The nearest farms to Ardoch Cottage are Ardoch and Lea Farms so could be one of them. What age do you think my Granny looks in the photo? Thank you.

Well you posted her age as 24 so it must be 24.

My family were at the next farms east being Hawthornhill and Havoc and my G Grandparent's lay in the Old Cardoss Parish Church so I am down that way once a year or so.  Btw...Ardoch Cottage is white but I can not attest that it was white then.  I am also connected to the Filshie's through marriage via the Robertson's of Old KP including John Filshie your Gran's employer.  And that Peter Robertson who married one of my cousins, Helen Marion Kerr Muirhead took over the farm after John had to give up Dalmuir apparently due to a very bad back in 1912.

But getting back to your post, the one thing that sticks out in this photo is your Gran is not dressed as a Farm Servant.  Filshie had three servants all roughly the same age.  Your photo has three young ladies also appearing to be the same age all dressed alike so my bet it was taken at Dalmuir or thereabouts.

I don't know what age she is in the photo. I know she was 24 when she married. Sorry for any confusion. Any thoughts about the clothes she's wearing if they're not Farm Servant clothes? Thank you.

I found this photo taken in 1910 on the Blantyre Memories site. It's the only photo I can find showing women (who were milkmaids in the photo) wearing similar clothing to my Granny. My Granny's occupation on the 1911 Census "General Domestic Servant" on a farm and on her marriage certificate 1913 "Farm Servant"
