Henry Twitty
« on: Wednesday 30 March 16 14:19 BST (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with any of the following?

I have a Henry Twitty born circa 1777/1782? On the 1851 Census he is living at Sunderland with his wife Margaret and children, states place of birth as Bristol, Somerset?

Cant find any baptism for Henry and the only other records I can find is that of a Henry Twitty being in the 16th Regiment of Foot, 1st Battalion in 1815?

Henry Twitty married Margaret Carter in 1816 at Bishopwearmouth and had the following issue:

Sarah Twitty 1817 - 1817, Thomas Twitty 1819, Henry Twitty 1822 - 1822, Robert Twitty 1825, William Henry Twitty 1828 and Elizabeth Twitty 1832 - 1833, all born at Sunderland.

Any help greatly appreciated! :)

He was in the regiment from 14 Oct 1799 to 26 June 1816, by which time he was "worn out and asthmatic".

Thomas H Twitty, cooper, granted an apprenticeship at Bristol to a George Morgan in 1791.  Same occupation as your Henry Twitty, so perhaps this was a relative of his?

Other Twitty references which may or may not all be connected with each other:

1742: Thomas Twitty marries Sarah Ruddle at Steeple Ashton, Wilts.
1768: Thomas Twitty of Seend, Wilts marries Sarah Harley of Tewkesbury, at Tewkesbury (FreeREG).
1769: Thomas Harley Twitty baptised at Bridgnorth, Shropshire - parents Thomas & Sarah.
1778: Probate on will of Thomas Twitty, gentleman, of Seend (National Archives).*
1783: Thomas Harley Twitty is apprenticed to a Mr Westcott, cooper, at Bristol.
1791-2: "Harley" Twitty is listed in Bristol directories as a cooper, at Horse-Street.
1797: Sarah Twitty is listed in a Bristol directory offering lodging-house accommodation, St Michael's Hill.
1800: Sarah Twitty aged 20 buried at St Michael, Bristol (FamilySearch).
1804: Thomas Harley Twitty or Harley-Twitty marries Sarah Browning, Wilton by Salisbury, Wiltshire.
1805: Thomas Twitty, 62, buried at St Michael, Bristol.
1807: Thomas Twitty and Sarah have a son, Thomas Harley Twitty, baptised at Salisbury.

No positive link to Henry yet, but suspect there's likely to be one somewhere - it may not be a coincidence that his first two children were Sarah and Thomas.

*This Thomas refers in his will to:

Wife: Sarah
Sons: Thomas, William and Charles.
Daughter: Elizabeth Wallace, a widow
Mother-in-law: Anne Twitty (presumably a stepmother as we would describe the relationship now).
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)

Worcs: Milward (Redditch)

From the index of Bristol baptisms published by the Bristol FHS (Vols 8-10)

Henry Twitty, son of Thomas and Sarah, was baptised at St James, Bristol, 6 Aug 1780

This is all the other Twittys listed:
TWITTY AMELIA, THOMAS SARAH 5.06.1785 ST.JAMES
TWITTY CHARLES ALEXANDER, WILLIAM ESTHER 18.08.1776 ST.GEORGE GLS
TWITTY CHARLES ELEXANDER TWITTY, WILLIAM ESTHER 4.05.1784 ST.JAMES 8 YRS
TWITTY DINIA, THOMAS SARAH 5.03.1775 ST.JAMES
TWITTY HENRY, THOMAS SARAH 6.08.1780 ST.JAMES
TWITTY HENRY BAYLEY, THOMAS SARAH 3.03.1811 ST.JAMES
TWITTY LORETTA MARIA, THOMAS SARAH 9.06.1782 ST.JAMES
TWITTY RICHARD WHITAKER, THOMAS SARAH 10.03.1776 ST.JAMES

It must be unlikely that the 1811 baptism is the same parents.
Their marriage index has William and Hester in 1775 but no other Twitty groom.

Just to add my TWITTY notes:

Thomas Harley Twitty married Sarah Browning 9 April 1804 St Mary, Wilton by Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Thomas H. and Sarah had a son, Thomas Harley Twitty, born 18 April, 1807 and died 6 January 1808 in Salisbury.
They also had a son Henry Twitty, born 30 July 1809, Salisbury and died 24 Dec 1887, Poole, Dorset.
Sometime between around 1809/1810, Thomas Harley Twitty, Snr, died ( I cannot locate a record of this) and Sarah remarried to Thomas Adams Bayley on 30 Sep 1810, St. Martin, Salisbury.

HENRY...
He was christened Henry TWITTY (father's last name) but after Thomas Bayley and Sarah married in 1810, he was called Bayley on all subsequent census.  He is also mentioned on Christian Adams Bayley Will. (mother of Thomas A. Bayley
"And in case both my said grandsons shall die under the age of twenty one years and without leaving any child or children there upon trust to convey pay and assure any said estate and effects unto Henry Twitty, son in law (meant step-son in those days) of my late son, his executors, administrators and assigns, etc" written in 1832

His marriage, however, is recorded as TWITTY.
Henry Twitty married Susanna Pitman 24 Sept 1832 at St. James, Poole, Dorset.

Sarah and Thomas A. Bayley went on to have 3 more children, one of whom is my 2x great grandfather.

She was born about 1785 in Salisbury, and died Dec 1821 in Poole, Dorset very close to the birth and death of her third child, daughter Sarah.

Hoping this is of some assistance in your search,
Regards,
Grub
