Peter Fannen
« on: Thursday 31 March 16 13:28 BST (UK) »
Hi

Looking for a birth or a baptism of a Peter Fannen (born circa 1847/1849) possibly in Roscommon, but also could be Monaghan (sorry!).
He can be tentatively found in County Durham, England in 1861 (surname spelt Favan), and again in Murton, County Durham in 1871 (surname spelt Phannon), with the Martin family from Ireland, who were relatives of some kind.

He married Mary Jane Dove in the mid 1870's and remained in the northeast until his death in the 1890's. He can easily be found with Mary in 1881 and 1891.

Any help with who is family were would be appreiciated.

Thank you

Sue

Do you have his father's name from his marriage certificate?
or any indication of parish of origin?

the 1840s are just about the start of the availability of formal records and searching this, and earlier periods, is very difficult without specific details

However this is a LINK to the 1901 census for Roscommon for FAN*

Note there are several variants of the name for searching purposes
There are 24 people aged 50 +/- 5 years that if still living in their home place could help start your search

There are two baptisms that I can see in Ardcarne/Cootehall
Oct 24 1845 & May 21 1847 of Peter FANNING
both had parents: F Darby FANNING and M Mary Skeffington
This naming practice was not unusual

bear in mind that all records are not available online and this is not necessarily your Peter
Having his father's name would help prove it though

Hi

I don't have Peter's father's name from his marriage certificate - I'll contact registrars and see if they will confirm it as Darby (or not!)

Thanks

Sue

Hi

I have checked with Sunderland registrars and they have confirmed that Peter named his father as Darby Fannen on his marriage certificate!

Thanks so much for your help!

Sue

Great news.

www.nli.ie has the catholic baptism records. You maybe able to locate the church record. For some reason the site is not currently opening for me.

Here's a baptism for a Peter Fanning in the Cootehall RC parish register, 21 May 1847, bottom of left page, parents Darby Fanning and Mary Skeffinton, sponsors Peter and Elizabeth Fanning:

To add to gaffy's find

If you look on the same registers you should find the baptisms of
another Peter on May 21 1845 and a James on Jan 18 1843

I don't see a baptism of a Micheal but one s/o Darby, a farmer,
married Catherine MacKeon in nearby Drumcong RC Co Leitrim
on Nov 13 1864 aged 25 (implies born c 1839)
Witnesses James FANNING & Mary Anne CASSIDY
He may be another brother
