So far I can find only one other reference to Anderson in connection with Udol/Udoll/Udale, and that is a mention in a newspaper report in the Inverness Courier Nov 1818, of "the Misses Anderson, Udol" amongst ladies at a ball.

Looking at the roads on both maps...yours & mine, they are the same place, just a pity there's no info.  ::)

I have been away from my PC so hadn't seen the replies later than where I described the word we were hoping to decipher.
So - many, many thanks to all of you who have replied and taken the time to look into this for us.
ESPECIALLY the snippet from The Times 1819 - this is definitely what we have been trying to establish - that William Henry d. 1819 Cheshunt may have been the son of the Alexander Anderson,  Cromartyshire in the photo.
Now we have evidence, thanks to all of you.
Woo - hooooo!!!   :) :) :) :)
Hard to believe that from so far away we can unearth secrets from the past with the help of people like all of you  :)
Thanks again.

Hello

There was an Alexander Anderson, Esq., [Shipping] Agent at Inverness in 1819 and obviously wealthy.

Alexander Anderson, Esq., Agent, Inverness, is mentioned in the 1819 Testament Dative and Inventory of Captain James Hood, Shipmaster of Cromarty. Vessel was the Lizard.

It wouldn't be a photograph in 1819, possibly more of a painted portrait? The first photo was 1826 and very very fuzzy and took many hours to expose.  Search 'Joseph Nicéphore Niépce'
http://www.environmentalhistory.org/revcomm/photography/photography-1/

If it is about 200 years old and despite its damage, I think it is a wonderful picture! Better a picture, than no picture at all, I say!

Thank you for showing us.
