What could this address be?
« on: Saturday 02 April 16 14:03 BST (UK) »
After searching through the new records of school admissions 1870-1914, I have discovered a family member who was admitted to the Ashington New Hirst North Council School, Ashington, Northumberland.
Her address is given only as " 42 Pop " - what could that mean?

Probably Poplar Street, and Rosa is Rosalind Street. You can see the streets near the schools on the map at http://maps.nls.uk/view/101028531#zoom=4&lat=5061&lon=3838&layers=BT

I suggest Poplar Street - based on no local knowledge whatsoever :-) so its not writ in stone.

Paging back in the register the entries seem to have fuller addresses :-) There was obviously a range of streets with tree names, Poplar, Sycamore, Chestnut etc. Looks like whoever made the entries got a bit fed up of writing them all out in full and used their own kind of shorthand.

There does still seem to be a Poplar Street in Ashington.

I agree, also there was a Rosalind Street, Hirst, Ashington in 1911, possibly Rosa shorthand for Rosalind Street :)

Such brilliant information. Thank you everyone.

That link to the map is really good, and now I am wondering if there would be a similar link to another address - Gordon Street, which could be in Choppington, Northumberland, as my family member was admitted to Choppington Colliery Schools on 20 March 1906.

According to newspaper reports Gordon Street was in Guide Post, Choppington. Going by the 1911 census it appears that Gordon Street is adjacent to High Street, but is not named on any maps.  https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/425482/585081/12/101116

As Stan says, Guide Post seems the most likely.
In the 1901 census the enumerator's description for 'the whole of Guide Post' specifically mentions Gordon St, amongst others. Unfortunately, though I have paged through all 43 images, he then doesn't mention it or many of the other street names in the description - though there are lots and lots just marked as Private Houses.

Piece 4834, Folio 152 page 1 is the first page in the image set if you want to look through in case I missed it .
