Clemence from England
« on: Saturday 02 April 16 22:35 BST (UK) »
I hope I am posting this on the correct page.  I am looking for Frank  Herbert Clemence from Chester, Cheshire, England who I believe died on the 21st December 1905 in Virden his age was 42. On the 1911 Census for Chester, England, his wife Annie is listed as a Widow.  I would be most grateful if someone could let me know why he was in Virden.
Kind regards
Heather

Shame we cannot see the death cert - it may have given us an occupation.  Death cert is listed on Manitoba death index but you have probably found it there.

Have you tried to contact the nearest local library to see if they can help  ???

Hi Heather:

You don't give many details about Frank, but LAC has a record for a Frank Clemence, age 33 arriving on the 'Lake Superior' to the port of Montreal, Quebec from Liverpool on 20 July 1899.

Could this be him?

His marriage certificate has occupation as farrier, if you look for him in the newspapers, I believe he maybe  Superintendent and Purchaser of Horses to the Government of Afghanistan. He's back in England buying for the Ameer 1895 but I can't see anything after that so far.

In one article, speaks of the great kindness with which the English ladies are treated in Cabul.

There's an UK incoming passenger list for a Frank Clemence c 1867 on board the Cambroman Sep 1899 from Quebec but I can't make out the occupation...Bute???

Just found another snippet in the paper

Cheshire Observer (Chester, England), Saturday, October 04, 1890

Married, on Sept. 30, 1890, in St. John's Church, of Eden House, Loughall, Ireland, to Annie, eldest daughter of Joseph Lawson, of Great Egerton-street, Chester.

Just realised, it's on the marriage certificate!

Not sure if it is farmer on the marriage, it is on the marriage bond. Tried searching all round but not coming up with anything else.

Not found in nearby newspaper Brandon Sun, Virden cemetery or Manitoba probate records.  Curious that death was registered twice, first in 1916 then in 1917.  If I had 24 Canadian dollars to spare, I would get both death certs to see why this occurred.

Also no mention in 3 separate Virden history books found online at manitobia.ca (note spelling) or Winnipeg Free Press.
