Death Certificate.
« on: Monday 04 April 16 09:08 BST (UK) »
Hi folks ;)

My 2x great grandmother died in Stockton 1899,
my problem with her is i dont know where she was born,
could have been England/Ireland/Scotland.
I have no idea who her parents were ???

My question is would a death certificate give her parents names or one of them,
just wondering if the death certificate worth ordering.

Many thanks.
Derek ;)

No, not on an English death certificate. It will tell you the age, cause of death and informant, so is unlikely to shed any light on her parents.

Hello Derek

Can you find her in the 1891 census or an earlier one, what does that say for her place of birth? Then you could track back and find her marriage which may at least give you her father's name and from there, if you can find them in a census before her marriage, that will give you her mother.

Thanks so much for replies folks ;)

Hi groom, my problem with Mary Ann is she married in Glasgow 1850, i was told this was before marriage certificates were issued, they may even have married in the home as most were.
On two documents i have on Mary Ann the first 1851 census showing James & Mary Ann living
with a family in New Vennel { Glasgow } this one states she was born Lanarkshire.
1861 poor relief shows her as born Ireland, so no help there.

All the best.

Hi Derek what was her surname ? there is a Mary Anderton in the 1851 census for Scotland with husband James in New Vennel Glasgow is this your relation ...If so you could look for a death for her husband hopefully after 1855 which should give his wife's maiden name ..Do you have her in the later census forms

Thanks to jomot i got the free vouchers yesterday.
I dont think iv'e posted on my 2x great grandmother before on Rc, if i have sorry :'(

my 2x great grandmother was Mary Ann O'Brien.

I was told some time ago when starting out that James Casey married Mary Ann O'Brien
28 February. 1852 Blackfriars { not sure this is true at all and may have been earlier }

Mary Ann can be found with husband James and months old daughter Elizabeth living with a family called Mullin at 47. New Vennell, on this it states Mary Ann's birth as Lanarkshire.

1862 applies for poor relief { residence Night Asylum } her pace of birth given as Ireland.

There were several O'Brien families living in or around the same area:

in 1841  a Hugh & Agnes O'Brien who had a daughter about Mary Ann's age { could be her ? }
living at 75 High st { Glasgow }

An 1851 census found a Mary Ann O'Brien. Cotton mill worker. Born England aged 20yrs
Parents: James & Margaret 40 yrs old born Ireland.
A sister Margaret also born England. A sister Elizabeth born Glasgow & older brother Joseph aged
24 yrs born Ayr. At address 10 New Street, Calton. Glasgow.

I think James & Mary Ann married 1851, not sure why as no marriage certificate, so its possible the Mary Ann living at 10 New Street could be her but again how to prove it ???

Many thanks for looking, all the best.
