Well, that makes sense as the workhouse was on Penglais Road, on the site of Bronglais hospital. She didn't come up when I searched before and now I can see why, the road name isn't given as part of the workhouse address. She's enumerated as part of the workhouse staff, Industrial trainer, born Talybont aged 34 which would put her birth rather before 1862.

eldest child is Margaret aged 10 on the 1861. I think the enumerator may have reversed David & Mary's ages on the 1871 census

1851 Penrhylog, Talybont, Llanfihangelgeneurglyn
David Rees head mar 34 hand loom weaver
Mary wife 27
Mary Davies mother in law 56 labourer's wife
all born Llanbadarnfawr

1881 census Mary is widowed, Lewis & Henry still with her RG11/5447 folio 97 pg 22.

There's a possible burial for David Rees in the Tabernacle in Llanfihangelgenau'rglyn 26 May 1874,  Tabernacle being the Baptist church in Talybont. There's a transcription on FreeReg, no age given, but it would appear to tie in with this death reg
David Rees 58 june qtr 1874 Aberystwyth vol 11b pg 57

The marriage registration for David Rees & Mary Davies looks to be Dec qtr 1850 Aberystwyth vol 27 pg 35

FreeReg has some baptisms to the couple in Llangynfelyn parish church
John bp 31 March 1854
Margaretta bp 31 March 1854
Jane bp 3 March 1856
abode noted as Talybont on all of these

Thanks again everyone! You've all been great!
I think you're onto it with the workhouse connection. Family lore always said there was a female workhouse officer in this line and the newspaper confirms. I found another article about the arrangement for a successor to J Rees.

The 1891 census must surely be her then? So she must be lying about her age but when? Did she lie to make herself younger to her husband or older to her colleagues? ;-)

Not sure then about the jump to the 1871 census and that Rees family. How do we know it's the right one?

Thanks again everyone!

she wouldn't have been the first woman to lose a few years on marrying a younger man. I would think that the age she gave on the 1891 census before her marriage would be reasonably accurate. Going by the baptism she should have been 35.

As for the 1871 census, it's the only Jane Rees born Talybont with father David, a miner that seems to be around. Abode noted as Talybont on the baptism.

I think you're probably right then, osprey, if it's the only Jane, with a mining David for a father in the area then it's a safe bet. I could get the birth cert to be sure i suppose?

It's a bit funny that she kept up the fake birthdate to the grave. Her gravestone gives her 'updated' birthdate.
