Good find, Sue.  It will be interesting to see if this is the chap being sought by the OP.

The newspaper obit said he was "a native of Benalla" so I assumed he was born there.

Mollipops (Reply #3) gives a list of children who were registered in Benalla to John ASHCROFT and his wife Elizabeth Helen but has Elizabeth's surname as GRAHAM - perhaps she was married twice??

John Thomas ASHCROFT was born , not at Benalla, but at the small settlement of Durham Ox

This is his marriage when he would have given the information himself.  It is therefore likely to be accurate

ASHCROFT John Thomas (Born DURHAM OX)
MCKEAN Margery
Year 1887
Reg   6679

This is his death and gives his mother's maiden name.

ASHCROFT John Thomas
Father John Broom
Mother Eliz Helen  GREENLEES
Death Place BENALLA
Age 87
Year 1950
Reg Number 22487

His birth is not registered in Victoria, but age at death makes him a year or two older than Francis ASHCROFT If it is accurate.
Sue

Elizabeth Helen's maiden name is shown as GRAHAM on the children's births (and John & Matilda had children in Melbourne/Flemington around the same period, so defiinitely different John).

No births in Durham or to a John Broom ASHCROFT in early Vic.

So a couple of possibilities here.
1. The informant on JT's death got his mmn wrong (and came up with Broom from somwehere!).
2. This is a different John & Elizabeth (though given the location this seems a major coincidence).

 ???

Here is a  birth for an Elizabeth GRAHAM.  Given the mother's forename it's a possible for Elizabeth  :-\

Victoria 1844 #7647
Elizabeth GRAHAM
Birth Place:   Melbourne, Victoria
Registration Year:   1844
Father:   Peter Graham
Mother:   Helen

Edit to add: An on-line tree suggests that this Elizabeth GRAHAM married someone else  :(

Definitely wrong person as she married Mr Blyth in 1865
Death 1935
Elizth Fisher BLYTH
Father's Name   Peter Graham
Mother's Name   Helen Young

Hello fishnibbler,
Apart from Dundee's find in Western Australia, there have been many other replies on your thread here. Have you read them and if so, has the information been of interest?
