Samuel Baker: Stoborough
« on: Saturday 09 April 16 04:01 BST (UK) »
Hello From Hull, Massachusetts,
My 3rd Great grandfather, Job Baker was born in Carbonear, Newfoundland, in 1835. His parents are named on the record of baptism as John Baker and Sarah (?). At that time, Samuel Baker, of Wareham, Dorset, was living in Carbonear with wife, Jane Pelley. Samuel was born in 1780, emigrated to Newfoundland in 1805.  I believe Samuel may be John's father (Job's grandfather). I also have a lead which points toward Stoborough as the place of Samuel's birth  I wonder if anyone might be researching the Bakers of Stoborough and may be willing to offer some insight/info, etc.

Gratefully,

Stephen Baker

Hello
Not my family but I've had a bit of a shifty and found a baptism for Samuel.
Wareham Old meeting House in Meeting house lane ,Independent or Presbyterian

Samuel the son of Daniel and Ann Baker of Stowborough born Dec 10 1779 and baptised  Jan 6 1780

There's not another Samuel Baker baptised in Wareham at that date so it's looking good.

Siblings -brother Daniel born Nov 16th baptised 17.12.1764 ,Sarah born Feb 27th bapt. 27.3.1769,Samuel born April 14th baptised 30.4.1771,and sister Ann born 30 Jan 1775 baptised Feb 8 1775.

There are other Baker  couples from Stowborough/Stoborough and the images are on Ancestry.

Daniel the father was buried at holy Trinity Wareham  31st April 1799
Samuel sons 15th July 1767 and 2nd July 1771.Daughter Anne 12.10.1773
Two possible burials for Ann Baker the mother 30.5.1802 and 8.10.1807

There is a possible marriage at the parish church but it is really early
Daniel Baker labourer and Anne Langdown both of Stowborough were married by banns 12.7.1756. marks of both witnesses Thomas Dan and Isaac Court.

There's a mention of a Samuel Baker of the parish of Lady St Mary Wareham in the Quarter session records imprisoned for 2 months for abandoning his family to the care of the parish. 7 Sep 1798.
The only other Samuel Baker is the one bapt 14 June 1762 s of William and Sussanna Baker at the independent chapel.

I'll see what else I can find
ps yes that Samuel imprisoned in 1798 is the other one ,not yours.
Daniel Baker of Stoborough is renting land from Robert Dugdal in the rate books from 1781-1799 (they start 1780).

Ciderdrinker,
Great username!
This info is priceless. I can't thank you enough for offering it. It really looks as if this is my Samuel's family. Pretty amazing, if I am reading this right, they had 2 sons named Samuel who both died and then named yet another one Samuel.
Many thanks!!

Hi Ciderdrinker,
I've come back to these records and agree this is probably a good bet. I found the quarter sessions record on Samuel of Will. and Susanna. It appears this Samuel was a tenant in Stoborough before he was locked up. He's in the rate books from 1788-1793, Giles Brown proprietor. Obviously my Samuel, born 1779 would be too young to be listed, so this must be the Samuel who was imprisoned. Possibly a cousin.
You bring up a good point about the marriage being very early, but possibly back then siblings were born 23 years apart. I'm still going to scour all Stoborough records.
Thanks again.
Steve
