Kelly from the Isle of Man......
« on: Saturday 09 April 16 18:01 BST (UK) »
Is anybody here familiar with Manx records please?  I am trying to find out the occupation of the father of a groom to see if I am on the right track which I am now beginning to doubt.  >:(

From the Select Marriages on Ancestry which I believe are just the same as on the IGI/Family Search??

06 Feb 1896 Richard George Kelly (his father John Kelly) marries widow Mary Bentley (her father William Ennett) , she was previously married to John William Bentley and had 2 daughters with him.

Is there a way for me to find out the occupation of his father?

TIA

Hi,

You could purchase the marriage cert to clarify the occupation of Richard's father -

https://www.gov.im/registries/general/civilregistry/copy_certificates.xml

What makes you think that you are on the wrong track as the 1871 below would appear to be Richard George Kelly -

John Kelly   53
Margaret Kelly   43
Jeanetta Kelly   12
Richard G Kelly   6 b. Douglas, Isle of Man

I don't want to purchase the marriage certificate as it's only a brother of my 2 x g. grandmother and I was just tying up loose ends.

I do have his baptism as you have given and all the censuses except there are none after this marriage either by himself or with wife Mary.  I have found a very strange case of probably his wife and 2 step daughters in Liverpool with another man in the 1901 census and they say they have been married 22 years on the 1911 census.  :o

As far as I can tell Richard didn't die until 1905.

Maybe she left him and ran off to Liverpool with her children but I really don't want to spend any more time on this wife and kids until I know it's the right family if you see what I mean.

His father John should be an HM Customs Officer so although the Kelly name is very common in the IOM perhaps not so much the occupation.  I've even looked at other trees on Ancestry but nobody else seems to be following this path..........
