New Macbook, New Genealogy Software : Choices, Choices, Choices.
« on: Sunday 10 April 16 18:03 BST (UK) »
Folks, I'd really appreciate some advice.

I turned 50 last month and my family gave me a Macbook (which I love). I've been researching my own tree for about 10 years and moved on to helping others with their family history as I work in community education. I set up a small research business last year and have had a few commissions.

At first I used GenesReunited which I found was really useful for storing data, then I bought Family Historian for my PC and, apart from a few niggles, it was great for data storage and reporting.

I'm now contemplating my next move and have spent hours reading articles and looking at demos online. I'm no further forward, to be honest. Family Historian doesn't seem to be available for Macs so I guess I'm looking at a change of software.

I like simple platforms and good design. I want the software to be UK friendly and being able to customise reports and charts the way I like them is really important to me.

Has anyone else been in a similar position and willing to share their experience with me? If I can narrow my choice down to 2 or 3 programs, it would make life a lot easier!

Have a look at Reunion for Mac   http://www.leisterpro.com .

I've run version 8 and now 10, and can recommend.

Appears they are now on Reunion 11.

I agree, an excellent programme, I rue the day it was no longer supported for Windows PCs.

I have heredis too, it's available for both mac and windows. Advantage i found was that i could put the app (free) on my ipad and tranfer info easily between the two.
I must admit i haven't updated to their 2016 version so not sure what the improvements are.
Before buying i tried several different trial programmes but heredis was the one i liked the best. The only problem i had was finding how to set the day to dd/mm/yy rather than mm/dd/yy. It was well hidden in the online manual!  ;D

Thanks so much. Really helpful pointers.

I had looked at both Heredis and Reunion and will start trialing them to see if they suit me.

The American default stuff with apps drives me crazy!

If you were quite happy with Family Historian you could run it on a Mac using the likes of Crossover
https://www.codeweavers.com/products

The FHUG has some advice regarding this at

I was never able to get this to work, which is a shame as I want to try out FH.
