The Parfitt/Dando marriage was in Gloucestershire 1875.

This can be easily ruled out; although they have the same page reference they did not marry one another.

Mary Dando married the other man on the page, John Norman, 11 Dec 1875, Bristol (Wesleyan Methodist).

Have found Mary's maiden name and the marriage to John Parfitt.

Mary was just plain Mary Whiffen birth registered Dec.qtr.1853 Wimborne and she was baptised 5/2/1854 Wimborne Minster, dau. of Thomas and Mary Ann (as Whiffon).

The 'mother in law' in 1891- i.e. Mary Ann - should read as Whiffen and not dittoed as Parfitt.

Mary Ann Whiffen died Mar.qtr. 1893 Wimborne.

I had noted a Mary Whiffen had married in Dec.qtr.1873 Wimborne where one of the possible grooms was a John Barfoot!!    Barfoot/Parfitt - further investigation needed.   Had the surname been indexed by GRO incorrectly?

Then, luckily, I found the marriage on Ancestry where you can view the actual marriage certificate.

Seems it's the vicar, not the GRO, who had written the name wrong.

Shows:
John Barfoot  full age   Labourer     son of James Barfoot, Labourer
married 25/12/1873 Wimborne to
Mary Whiffen  20      dau. of Thomas Whiffen, Labourer

Then, where both John and Mary have signed, it clearly shows his signature as John Parfitt (not Barfoot).

Was indeed a conundrum.    Mary died I see as plain Mary Parfitt in 1923.

Oh well done Annette :)

I did wonder about Mary Whiffen - daughter Lilian Beatrice Parfitt married Wiliam Henry George Whiffen in Hinton Parva in 1915, so he may (or may not) be a cousin or similar.

I was surprised to see the surname W(h)iffen in Dorset - much more used to finding it in East Anglia!

Hi Annette

Many congratulations - excellent result.  Yet again you manage to "pull the bunny out of the hat" when everybody else has failed (miserably in my case)

Why thank you, avm228 and CaroleW.

It really turned out ridiculously easy.   1891 said Mary A. (mother in law) was b.1811 Wimborne and living in Wimborne.  I searched with these exact details fully expecting I'd have to 'expand' birth year, etc. etc.  Out of 4 'results' only one was actually living in Wimborne and was Mary A. Whiffen with husband Thomas.

Jumped back to 1861 to see if they had a daughter Mary - yes they did - although Mary A's birthplace this time given as Shapwick.

Then looked at marriages for a Mary Whiffen which was luckily online - and discovered vicar had recorded that her husband was John Barfoot but he had clearly signed as Parfitt.   Sorted.
