There's also a marriage of Edward CONTES (think it's COATES on the image) to Mary Ann HOWARD 16 Jan 1898 St Peter Cricklewood. (Hendon reg)

Her father is listed as John but his occupation is lime burner which is "off". However,I noticed a John HOWARD born 1796 Swaffham with the same occupation. Is that her grandfather?

And of course I can't find the happy couple in 1901.

I like the look of Edward Coates,

There is a Mary A Coates age 36 Widow in Swaffham in 1901 census, and a burial for Edward Coates in 1899 in Swaffham

I think we can rule out Clara (and David Gates) as "our" Clara was settled as Mrs Hale.
