I see no reason why James can't have gone from Luton to Clapham to find work, for example.

No reason at all. But it's up to you to prove it. Is there a settlement certificate? As things stand it's just a possibility, pure speculation. Without some sort of supporting evidence, other than the name's the same, it's a recipe for researching someone else's ancestors.

Ah...: a person who makes articles out of metal, especially tin.
a polisher or finisher of metal goods.

Just to tidy up, see subsequent thread at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=746449.msg5938451#new which appears to demonstrate that a whole generation, at least, of Lightfoots were baptised as FOOT in Clapham, including James on 28 Jan 1770, son of John and Elizabeth FOOT. A number of their other children all baptised as Foot married in Clapham as Lightfoot.
