Whelan
« on: Thursday 14 April 16 17:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

I believe my 4 x g grandparents were Martin Whelan and Julia Moore of Ireland who later settled in Lanarkshire.   Descendants were in Hamilton Scotland.  I would appreciate some advice on locating their birth, marriage, death and census records.

Thank you

1871 indexed as Wheeler but somebody has notified a transcription error back in 2012 so may be researching the same family

I have sent an email directing them to your post

1871 for New Monkland

Martin Wheeler (Whelan)   34 coal miner
Julia  30
Robert   10 b Ireland
Michael  8 Ireland
John  7 Ireland
James  4 b Bathgate, Linlithgow
Mary  1 b New Monkland

They must have married in Ireland around 1859-1860

I believe that they had a son born about 1860.

Robert married Mary Ann McConnell (I think).  They were living in hamilton 1881 census. He was 21 and Mary Ann was 23.  They had a 1 year old daughter Maggie.

They had a few more children, but Robert appears to have died before 1891.

Martin and Julia mat have also had a son Patrick

Transcribed as Wheelan in 1891 and birthyear 10yrs different to 1871

Martin Wheelan   64 Ireland
Julia 59 Ireland
James  22 b Bathgate
Sarah  20 b Hamilton
Mary  19 b Longriggend, Lanarkshire
Julia  14 b England
Patrick  12 England
Catherine Manwell 3 Months granddaughter b Hamilton (no idea if this surname should be Whelan)

If Martin died in Scotland then a copy of his death cert will give you his parents names and mothers maiden name - same with Julia     www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Carole
Thank you very much, this has given me so much more than I had, due to different spelling of name.

Julia's birth was registered as Whelan in September qtr 1877  and Patrick's as Whelan in September qtr 1879 - both in Durham

There is a death registration for Martin as Whelan in 1896 and if you buy some credits you can download his death cert from the Scotlands People website
