Michael O'Brien
« on: Friday 15 April 16 11:45 BST (UK) »
Hi
After a young lady helped me tremendously with a conundrum from Wimborne, Dorset, I have another about my 3rd great grandfather.

My mother's grandmother - Eliza Stone O'Brien was born in Christchurch, Hants in or about 1841 ( I have her details) - I have found her father Thomas and also her grandfather Michael. So far OK.

The problem, I have is - where does Michael come from?...all I have is he was born about 1780 (where?...no idea) .... I know he died about 1851 in Christchurch, Hants -sorry Hampshire..

I also have a name whom I believe is his wife, Margaret/Peggy Heath.

It is possible he could be Irish or his own father (details unknown) are Irish.

Any ideas or info, I will be grateful.....

I have tried with the 1841 census, but I do not think I have tried hard enough..
Apsey, Milner.

They lived in Christchurch...

The names I have - if it helps at all... are as follows:-
Betsey (born out of wedlock) born abt 1799
Ann born abt 1805
James born abt 1813
Mary born abt 1817
Thomas born abt 1819 - This is my great, great, great grandfather
Edward born abt 1822

So the family I found in 1841 could be father Michael with his son Thomas with Thomas's wife Mary and their children including Eliza  - Although unsure re Fanny

I wonder if Fanny was Thomas's wife in 1841 and Mary was his sister as this could be the family mistranscibed in 1851 living at  Christchurch and all born there.

Thomas Beren 30  Ag lab
Fanny Beren 29
Eliza Beren    10
Fanny Beren 8
John Beren    4
Rosa Brien    2

Hiya
With this, I am unsure, as I have a record for Michael O'Brian, with a daughter Betsey and wife Peggy..also a death record for Michael O'Brien in 1851...all located in Christchurch, Hampshire..
I do remember, that I had confusion with Michael's surname - as it has been spelt 2 different ways.

Michael O'Brian
Michael O'Brien

Spellings of names do vary and it does look as though the O in front of O'Brian/O'Brien was missing on occasions in the census etc

You give Eliza Stone O'Brian as the daughter of Thomas O'Brian born about 1841 and I think her birth appears on FreeBMD as Eliza Stone Brian in March Qtr Christchurch 1841 8 154

And there is a marriage on Family Search of Thomas Brien to Fanny Stone in  1840 at Christchurch with his father listed as Michael Brien.  Presumably Eliza got her middle name from her mother's maiden name?

Yes, my great grandmother's name Eliza Stone O'Brien, with Stone taking from her own mother's name..

Yes, this could be correct as well...''' I think her birth appears on FreeBMD as Eliza Stone Brian in March Qtr Christchurch 1841 8 154'''

To me, it is all confusing, because of the name changes.....I can just imagine Michael giving his name in an Irish accent and whoever, wrote down the details, just wrote as they thought what they heard.
