Researching ship owners and bankruptcy
« on: Friday 15 April 16 17:43 BST (UK) »
my ancestor was a ship owner who died in 1884 so I am guessing there would records relating to this. The story goes that he lost a ship that wasn't insured and so was bankrupt when he died - again I am wondering if there would be court records in relation to bankruptcy?
Any and all advice welcome about potential sources I could consult.

Have you any idea of the name of the ship,  or the port where the ship was registered?

Can you please disclose his name?     Where was the ship lost?

There may be records in lists of ships lost.

Thanks for replying

at this point in time I have little to go on - I can see there are records for his time as a captain in the Lloyds Captains Register held in the London Metropolitan Archive but I won't be in London anytime soon.

there is family folklore about it, but I was hoping to identify sources - even if not available online -so I can plan some research trips and get some accurate information....

trawling through the newspaper archives is like looking for a needle in a haystack - if there was a register of owners for ships registered in Belfast or something like that then at least I would have a better chance of finding the information I'm looking for. The problem is I don't even know where to begin!

Is there a maritime museum in Belfast?   I am sure there should be.

Ask them if they have a register of ships lost.   Probably any list  will also show the value of the cargo  and list the names of the crew lost or survived.

Was he a 'bankrupt' or an 'insolvent debtor' there was a difference.

Bankrupt Notices, give full name and town, when the Bankrupt had to appear and at which Court, (or the Guildhall, London, not sure for Ireland), if the Bankruptcy was discharged, or when the Certificate was issued (usually a few years later) should be here ...

350 years of the Gazette pages are here, for free pdf page download ...

A tip, on Google or the Gazette, put all your relatives full names in a set of inverted commas, e.g., "Jack Whale Herbert" 1881. Try a year, if too many results.

The L.G. / Belfast Gazette, might now be the only record and Bankruptcy files will depend, whether an Archive took the files from the appointed Court.

Try N.I. Archives for an Ireland research guide.

You've posted again on the wrong board- this time onb Antrim Resources & Offers which is not for queries. Just click on 'report to moderator' and ask for this thread to be moved to the main ANTRIM board.

You were asked in reply #1 for the ancestor's name but haven't posted it as far as I can see so it will be difficult to check other resources for you.
