Charles Melville death record Port Adelaide 1947 - lookup
« on: Saturday 16 April 16 10:47 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have access to the Genealogy SA database. If yes, do you mind looking up a death record listed on that site for a "Charles Melville" who is listed as dieing in 1947 in Port Adelaide in South Australia. I'd like to know what the greyed out information refers to.

Many thanks in advance

Ed Osborne

This seems to be their marriage notice 1913 NSW

:) Wow, thanks everyone. This is all really helpful. Hope this is right person I am currently researching.

Bit confused by him as an individual as Charles Melville's original name was actually Charles Eschwege. I found out on a separate probate about Charles Eschwege being known as Charles Melville and living in Port Adelaide.

Am bit confused by reference to him being a dealer and also a seaman in different records. But the dates tally with his birth so I guess this must be the person I am looking for.

Genealogy always raises more questions than answers and now need to find way to identify birth of his wife and if they had children. Hopefully marriage and death certificates will provide more clues. Australian certs contain more details than UK ones don't they or is that not always the case? The death index doesn't refer to any relatives names so not sure if it will say much more.

:)

Ed

Just confirming that it is the correct marriage ..

Silver wedding announcements (at same address as he died)
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article36599947 and http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article92431277

Hmmm not finding much at all ...  :(

Here's what to expect on Australian certs - it varies between states and over time
http://www.jaunay.com/bdm.html   This also gives a link to order a transcribed South australian certificate (in red at top of page).

regards,

I would assume that Charles had been a seaman who had established a second hand business in Port Adelaide.  Possibly his nickname was sailor.

I think you need to purchase a transcription of Charles' marriage certificate and let's hope he was honest with his information.  The certificate should give his age and place of birth; his parents' names and mother's maiden name along with his father's occupation.

ALLBRIGHTON seems to be a very uncommon name.   I'm wondering if it is an anglicised version of a German name perhaps ...?   Albrecht Albrechtsen ...?   ???
