Could be a spelling mistake.

Is it something to do with shoe  making or lace making?

You haven't put up the image but once upon a time an "s" would look like an "f" with a swinging tail.   Also could the "t" be an "l"?

i've heard of a "last" and used to have a metal one to mend shoes.  Lasts are also made of wood in the shoe manufacturing industry.  As seen on this link.

I have absolutely no idea what it is connected to. It appears on his son's marriage certificate as being occupation of father. The said taft maker lived in Thurmaston if that is of any use during the 1830's - 1840's. I'm sorry I can't snippets here with my phone.  He was previously a FWK.

Maybe others would like to comment on whether taft maker could be last maker in the shoe & boot industry..

I searched using the term: "history of shoe making of Thurmaston"  and came across a page in a book which explains why shoe making thrived in Thurmaston in the 1800s and earlier - apparently because labour was cheaper up north, they serviced the needs of people in London.
