Baptism in Wells
« on: Tuesday 19 April 16 13:33 BST (UK) »
Would anyone be able to look up a baptism of Joseph Hodges, born sometime in the 1790s in Wells. (In 1851 he is 57, in 1861 he is 69, in 1871 he is 72, so I can't be sure exactly when he was born!) He later lived in Bath.

Many thanks :)

This is the only match I can see 1790-1800. Looks like that last age was the most accurate.

St Cuthbert's, Wells. 1999
Joseph son of Thomas and Anne Hodge, born 14th February, baptized 17th March. Southover.

Possible Marriage;

12 April 1798, St Cuthbert, Wells
Thomas HODGES, Bachelor
Ann BIGGAR, Spinster
Witnesses   Thos.MAYNARD/   J LOVELL
Notes; Both sign X
(Source FreeREG)

In case you dont have the 1841 Census;

1841 Census
Prior Park, Lodge 4,
Lyncombe and Widcombe, Somerset
HO107/931/14/Lyncombe and Widcombe
Joseph Hodges, 40, Ag Lab
Ann Hodges, 50
Jno Hodges, 14
Charles Hodges, 9
Louisa Dan, 20

Baptisms FreeREG;
JOHN, 11 Sep 1826, Father a Gardener
CHARLES, 22 July 1832, Father a Gardner
Parents JOSEPH/ANN

Joseph Married Ann DAW, Widow, 31 Jul 1825, St James, Bath
(FreeREG)

So this is the 1851?
Joseph Hodges,   57, born Wales, Somerset, Occp Gardener
Ann Hodges, 62
John Hodges, 24
Alfred Daves, 11, Nephew***
(Likely Alfred Daw?)

Burial;
ANN Hodges, 29 Jan 1854, Widcombe - St Thomas a Becket, Bath
Age 65, abode Allen's Cottage
(FreeREG)

Looks like Joseph remarried by 1861?
I am trying to find the 2nd Marriage to check his Fathers name was Thomas on that.

I have a different 1861 Census than what you quoted;

1861 Census
Joseph Hodges, 59 (1802), General Gardener, born Wells
Eliza, 43, Wife, born Wells

1871 we have;
Joseph Hodges, 72 (1799), Gardener, born Wells
Eliza Hodges, 55

Trish :)

FreeBMD has a Eliza SMITH Marriage 1857 Bath, Joseph HODGES on same page

The second marriage was at the Registry Office so won't be on FreeREG. (BathBMD). (Or maybe at a non-conformist chapel, but FreeREG doesn't have any registers for those at Bath after 1837.)

The first wife was probably Ann Martin, married Charles DAW in Bath 1811, baptised at Wanstrow 1788. Daughter of James and Nancy.

Thanks for that, I'm guessing you typed the year wrong though! Is it 1799? ;D

Looks like the 1798 marriage is very likely too.

I'd already got all the censuses you both mentioned - Joseph's son John is my 3xgreat-grandfather. I'm planning on ordering the marriage certificate for Joseph and Eliza.... it's annoying that they married in a registry office, it could have saved me the cost of a certificate if I could find it in parish records!

Yes it is annoying but I am sure it will be worth the investment :)

Definitely! If it names his father as Thomas I'll know I'm on the right track :)

Will do :) I don't buy certificates very often because of the cost, and try to work things out through parish records and censuses. But this time I think it's necessary.

If Joseph's father was Thomas, as DRH123 suggested, it's surprising that the name doesn't crop up again in Joseph's branch of the family... Joseph's sons were called John and Charles.
