Sophia TREWARTHA nee STAPLE post1851
« on: Tuesday 19 April 16 14:26 BST (UK) »
I have run up against a problem finding out what happened to Sophia after 1851.

Sophia STAPLE bapt 22 Jul 1796 Gwennap age 19 (Cornwall opc transcript says 13, but it is 19)
married 27 Aug 1796 Gwennap - Abraham TREWARTHA
Abraham buried 26 Dec 1830 Gwennap
1841 census Sophia TREWARTHA, widow, Wheal Squire, Gwennap (with children Sophia and John)
1851 census Sophia TREWARTHA, widow, age 72, Gwennap

But I can't find a death for her on freebmd.
I can't find a marriage for her on freebmd (a marriage at age 72+ is unlikely, but had to be checked!)

Can anyone help?

Philip

there's a death registered in 1861

Sophia Trevethan sept qtr Redruth vol 5c pg 165

As yet I haven't found a Sophia Trevethan who is a candidate for that registration. Could be an error along the way Possibly worth asking the registrars in Truro to check the entry?

Heywood - the workhouse admission is a great find, - thank you so much.

Osprey, I hadn't spotted the entry for Sophia Trevethan.  I have seen Trewartha spelled many different ways and I know that there were Trevethan entries on parish registers going back to the sixteenth century, but given that Sophia is a comparatively unusual name the Redruth 1861 death is definitely worth checking.

Many, many thanks to you both.

"mea culpa"  I was looking through my old posts on this family and realised that I hadn't updated this thread.

Sophia TREWARTHA appears as Sophia TREWARTHAN on the Redruth Union workhouse record on her admission in January 1861.  She died in the workhouse on 25 July 1861 - on the death certificate her name is spelled TREVETHAN.

I bought a copy of the death cert - it states that she is the widow of Abraham TREVETHAN and the age at death shown as 81 years is consistent with S T on the 1861 census (which matches her birthplace) and within reasonable limits for an actual birth year of c1777.

So, the birth year only three years off, the correct birthplace, and the correct husband's name, (together with the fact that there is no record anywhere of a couple named Abraham and Sophia TREVETHAN) leave me in no doubt.

Once again, many thanks to everyone who helped, and my apologies for the (very) belated update.
