1881 Census Emma Chadwick of Barrow in Furness Lancashire
« on: Wednesday 20 April 16 03:21 BST (UK) »
Through this young lady b 1863, I am trying to establish the parents of William DAVIES with whom she is living in 1881. I have an 1871 Census of Madeley Shropshire recording an Emma Chadwick, mother Sarah b 1840 (states b at Broseley Shropshire) and was probably Sarah DAVIES and a possible sister of William. Sarah DAVIES married Thomas Chadwick in 1861 at Madeley V6A p 830.
The 1881 Madeley Census includes similar family members apart from Emma, perhaps because she lived with William in Barrow.
I know William's father to be John, deceased before 1869 and mother stated to be Hannah EARLSTONE on his death certificate, but could she be Hannah HURLSTON (Shropshire Marriage 15 Sep 1838 at Benthall p27/A/3/3.
The 1881 Barrow Census also includes a Thomas DAVIES b Broseley living with the SAGGAR family, a name familiar and spoken of by my father. Could he be William & Sarah's brother?
I'd love some help here. Too many possibles and not enough evidence.
Ken

Many thanks Keyboard86 for all your hard work.
The last item on your list, the 1861 Census showing the Francis & Ann family, I had seen and considered a possibility on the basis that William is shown as an Iron Works Labourer, a step in the ladder to the engineer he became. So maybe.
There are a couple of things though that don't gell.
Firstly, Emma Chadwick.
I've tried and tried to find Census entries for CHADDOCk without success and I can't see how Emma fits in there whereas I see it fairly clearly within the marriage of Sarah Davies to Thomas CHADWICK. Except my records don't state her parentage.
Secondly, is that in his marriage certificate, William shows his father's occupation as 'Engine Driver.' not bricklayer.
Lastly, the big question still remains, who was Hannah?
It is frustrating looking at the records that are available to me on the internet to find that parents names are rarely given, and where father's names are sometimes shown, mothers appear as Christian name only.
So once again, many thanks, and I think the mystery remains.

That marriage on Freebmd v6A p 830 is CHADDOCK not Chadwick, but Chadwick on FindMyPast?
So another Sarah Davies failure, it is that occupation of Engine Driver that puzzles me?

If you want my opinion with the years of birth for William & Thomas/Sarah as examples I really cannot believe what else you feel is necessary to prove that these are the relatives of Emma Chadwick b c 1863 in 1881?

Also what was so wrong with that 1838 marriage for John/Hannah?

:) So find this marriage, and it is not v6A page 830 on Freebmd, but I think this is the Chaddock family!

1861 census

Thomas Chadwick 21 occ Brick Maker
Sarah Chadwick 21
Both born Broseley
RG09/1859/42/32

This is the CHADDOCK family in 1851 census

James 34 occ Brick Maker
Elizabeth 36 b Kenley
George 14
Elizabeth 11
Thomas 11
James 8
John 3
Residing at back of Mrs Thomas Shop, Broseley
Census Ref HO107/1989/362/33

1861 Same family  headed by James CHADWICK 45 occ Tile Maker b Broseley
Census Ref RG09/1859/11/16
So looks like Thomas/Hannah were twins.

Birth registrations:-

June qtr 1839 Madeley

Hannah CHEDDOCK v18 page 90
Thomas CHEDDOCK v18 page 91

So as you can see in possibly the case of William's mother Hannah, Hurlston could also be an Earlston/e?

Thank you keyboard86. How can I ever thank you enough for all that you have done.
My mind wouldn't rest last night thinking of the 'engine driver'. I think the explanation must be that the brides father is also quoted as 'engine driver' and whoever provided the info. just thought that it sounded good for both. I'm happy with 'brick layer' or whatever and am amazed at how you were able to unravel all the twists and turns. I figured on the CHADDOCK and CHADWICK and am so pleased that after so long, the searching is done.
We are done and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Ken.

;D No problem at all, thoroughly enjoyed the chase, if you follow Francis Davies back to 1841 census you will find his father/mother/siblings in Broseley, Joseph on the 1851, dies aged 6 ( burial record for him on FindMyPast)

Finally have you noted in the 1871 census, Charles aged 30 and Thomas aged 18 are shown as "Sons" to a "Widowed"  Ann Davies aged 64, who appears to have been the "Wife" of Francis in 1861
Residing at Tining Road, Broseley
Census ref RG10/2757/45/43
In 1881aged 74 Single b Broseley
Census ref RG11/2639/33/16
An Ann DAVIS died December qtr 1883 Madeley aged 76?
So just who was she?!

Hi

Think I may be able to help with who Ann Davies could possibly be  :)

Look at the lodgers in the 1871 census with Ann, Charles and Thomas, ( on Anc* ) William and Alfred  CORFIELD both aged 20.

I went back to the 1851 census, and did a broad search of an ANN , no surname born 1807 Broseley, only one came back ....ANN CORFIELD.

Servant to an Andrew Dodd, barge owner.
Class: HO107; Piece: 1989; Folio: 485; Page: 21

claire

EDIT: there is also a marriage in the Dec. Qtr. 1858 Madeley district of

Ann CORFIELD and John DAVIS

Several possible deaths of a John Davis in Madeley district before 1861 census, where you find an Ann with Francis Davies.
