Mary Elizabeth PHILLIPS & father Thomas
« on: Thursday 21 April 16 09:34 BST (UK) »
A marriage announcement in a South Australian paper 25 September 1857 says MARY ELIZABETH only daughter of Mr Thomas Phillips, late of Kingston, Canada West to..... Also have England 1851 census when she was 11 says born Canada. birth c 1840+-
I know Kingston is in county Frontenac, had a look to see what I could find on line say with either birth or parents marriage. Her mother was Sarah Ann Thompson.  All these 'hints' lead to a Canadian conection  Parents Thomas and Sarah both died in Adelaide, South Australia

Any ideas on the Canadian conection please.

Hi cattao,

Have you contacted the public library in Kingston or the Old Fort Henry library? You may want to check the Drioun collection too. Hope that helps

I see that the 1851 census doesn't give an occupation for Thomas other than house proprietor. Do you know what it was? Is it possible he had been in the military as Kingston would be a place where English troops would have been sent.

Thanks Jacqui.  No I know nothing whatsoever about him except he and family were in Adelaide South Australia 1857+ This lot are very hard to pinpoint. Canadian resources hard to sort out. I'm assuming he owned house/houses in London???  Will keep on looking sideways.

Civil registration of BMDs only began in Ontario in 1869 so the most likely record of an earlier birth would be a baptism, if a record still exists. Some scattered records of marriages prior to 1869 do exist but are fewer in number the further back you go.
